Blanche L. Hediger

Blanche L. Hediger, age 80 of Highland, IL, died Friday, April 08, 2016, at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. She was born June 28, 1935, in Clay County, IL, the daughter of Arthur and Edith (nee Koehler) Werner. On June 28, 1952, she married Loyd L. Hediger at Highland, IL. He passed away on October 6, 2001. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. She was also a member of Highland Garden Club. Blanche grew up in Highland and graduated Highland High School in 1952. After her marriage, she and her husband lived on a farm nine miles south of Greenville, IL. They moved to Highland in 1961. Blanche started working for the Highland Community Schools after her children were in school. She worked in the office of the Primary and Upper-Elementary School for over 25 years, and was well liked by administration, teachers, parents and students. Together, she and her husband farmed 38 acres in Wisetown. Summers were spent camping, tending their vegetable garden and preserving vegetables and jelly. She started collecting salt and pepper shakers at age 13. She has collected nearly 500 sets. She was an avid card player (spades, euchre, and pinochle) and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. She acquired her Master Gardener Certification in 2003 and continued her membership in the Highland Garden Club. Gayle A. Thole, age 54 of Highland, IL, died Monday, April 11, 2016, at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL. She was born on Saturday, November 25, 1961, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Virgil and Adeline (nee Frey) Wilhelm. On Friday, December 04, 1981, she married Ronald J. Thole at St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL, who survives. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL and Highland Garden Club. Gayle was born in Highland, IL and grew up on a farm south of town. She graduated from St. Paul High School, Highland, IL, in 1979. She attended Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University with an emphasis in English education. She worked for Widmer Floral Company, Highland, IL, for over 30 years and purchased the business, July of 2011. Anything that was delivered from her shop had to be “Right/Perfect”. Work was never a 40 hour week, it included Saturdays, Sundays and all hours of the day. She enjoyed knitting, knitted all of her grandchildren a baby blanket; shooting pool at Scooters and Beagle Inn; Bowling League at Hi Top Bowl; playing euchre; solving word and jig-saw puzzles. She raised her own vegetables, canned them and was known for her salsa. She loved her children and grandchildren. Annually, with her siblings, in honor of their mother they did a Christmas Tree for the Louis Latzer Homestead and the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Survivors include: Husband – Ronald J. Eugene A. Abert

Eugene A. Abert, age 91 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at University Nursing & Rehab Center in Edwardsville, IL. He was born January 25, 1925, in Alhambra, IL, the son of Emil and Ella (nee Neuenschwander) Abert. On February 27, 1954, he married Donna A. Barva at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, IL. She passed away on October 19, 2007. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a former member of VFW Post #5694; and a former member of American Legion Lee Iten Post #439. Mr. Abert was born at Kaufman Station on the family farm southwest of Alhambra, IL. He attended West Country School, then St. Jacob School for one year, and graduated from Highland High School in 1943. He served as a Master Sgt. with the U.S. Army with duty in Korea. He was with the 1st Infantry Combat Engineers. He received the Korean Service Medal & the Army Occupation Medal-Japan. Before and after his Army service, he worked at Wick’s Organ. He was a foreman in the Mill Room, building organ pipes and cabinetry. He retired after 53 years. He enjoyed camping trips in his pop-up camper to Canada, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky. In his retirement, he went on many senior citizen tours and also visited family and friends throughout the country. He loved to fish and enjoyed taking his family to Silver Lake and other area lakes and ponds. As a master woodworker, he created tables, chairs, jewelry boxes, and wooden toys, including his own kitchen cabinets. Janet B. Hunsche, age 63 of Highland (rural Grantfork), IL, died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Deceased’s Residence in Highland (rural Grantfork), IL. She was born on Friday, October 17, 1952, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Leonard and Lillian (nee Steiner) Niggli. On Saturday, April 15, 1972, she married Ronald E. Hunsche at Grantfork United Church of Christ, Grantfork, IL, who survives. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Alhambra, IL; JOY Singers; SIU-E Retirees Association (Past President). Janet was born at Highland, IL and grew up on the family farm north of Grantfork, IL. She graduated from Highland High School in 1970 and immediately started working at SIU-Edwardsville. She retired in 2001 were she was Benefits Manager for the University. Janet continued for seven years working part time. She and her husband established Hunsche Field at Glik Park in Highland. They also helped start the Highland Quarterback Club. They were season ticket holders of the St. Louis Rams for over 20 years and attended two Super Bowls. She enjoyed playing golf several times a week. with friends, She, also, enjoyed bowling at Grantfork Bowl. Yardwork and gardening were her pastimes. She and Ron enjoyed cruises to Hawaii and the Caribbean; they also had travelled to Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, Alaska, Panama Canal, Germany and London. There were also trips with girl friends to Chicago, Lake of the Ozarks and Minneapolis. She was a very fine cook. Janet loved taking care of her family. Survivors include: Husband – Ronald E. Elizabeth A. “Betty” Kidd, age 70 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Saint Luke’s Hospital-West in Chesterfield, MO. She was born on Monday, July 23, 1945, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Raymond and Loretta (nee Ebersbach) Gaudette. On Wednesday, January 15, 1992, she married William E. Kidd at Hickman, KY, who passed away on Monday, April 17, 2000. Betty was born in St. Louis, MO; she and her family moved to Granite City, IL in 1954, where she attended Granite City High School. Following her marriage, she and her husband lived in Millersburg, IL. They moved to Highland, IL in 1962. She lived in Houston, TX (area) for about seven years, before returning to Highland, IL in 1980. She had been a resident of Highland ever since. During her life, she had been an EMT in TX, an over-the-road truck driver, operator of a professional cleaning service, and a volunteer at Highland Health Care Center. Dale E. Nagel, age 87 of Highland, IL, died Monday, April 25, 2016, at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born November 10, 1928, in Highland, IL, the son of Elmer and Bertha (nee Hausmann) Nagel. On November 27, 1950, he married Ruth Louise Elsie Bohnenstiehl at Highland, IL, and she survives in Highland, IL . He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. He was also a member of Helvetia Sharpshooters Society ; Madison Co. Farm Bureau ; Metro East Polka Club. Dale was born in Highland, IL and grew up east of Highland. He attended Forester Country School and Highland High School. He graduated from Highland High School in 1946. He worked as Hired Hand, worked for Highland Box Board Company, and measured grain bins for ASCS. He and his wife operated a Dairy and Grain Farm east of Highland. He retired from dairy business in 1975. In 1980, his son assumed operation of the Grain Farms. Dale enjoyed polka and other dancing, traveling internationally and throughout the U.S.A. Playing cards was a great past time. He enjoyed working with wood and continued to help with the operation of the farm up until Spring of 2016. Survivors include : Wife – Ruth E. John Douglas Behme, age 44 of Worden, IL, died Friday, April 29, 2016, at Mercy Hospital St. Louis, Saint Louis, MO. He was born on Wednesday, May 26, 1971, in Alton, IL, the son of John and Gail (nee Seeger) Behme. On Saturday, September 07, 1996, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Worden, IL, he married Angela M. Behme nee Redman who survives. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Worden, IL; Operating Engineers Local 520, Granite City, IL. He was born at Alton, IL and grew up in Worden, IL. He went to school at Trinity Lutheran School in Worden and graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1989. He became an Operating Engineer at age 19 and worked for Tom Allen Construction, Edwardsville; then worked for Keller Construction, Edwardsville, for 14 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, travelling and hiking with his family. He and his son Nick restored old cars. He truly loved spending time and being with his family. Survivors include: Wife – Angela M. Morris S. Cook, age 92 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, May 04, 2016, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, IL. He was born August 17, 1923, in Highland, IL, the son of Isaac and Stella (nee Frey) Cook. On October 21, 1947, he married Nona M. Pflugbeil at E & R Church in St. Jacob, IL. She survives in Highland, IL. He was a member of Saint Jacob United Church of Christ. He was also a member of Helvetia Sharpshooters Society (Honorary Member); St. Jacob Township Trustee for 26 years; Highland Senior Citizens. Morris was born and grew up Southwest of Highland on the family farm. He and his wife lived on the Cook Family farm in 1961. In the mid 1970’s to the early 1980’s he was a partner in Farmers Equipment Company, Trenton, IL. Morris retired from farming and moved to Highland in 2005. Morris loved to dance, play cards, travel on bus trips, and bowl. Most weekends would find him and his wife at Lindendale Park Ballroom. Morris was a good father and grandfather. He was born on Thursday, June 23, 1938, in Kankakee, IL, the son of Harold and Ruth (nee Johnson) Barney. On Saturday, December 02, 1995, he married Junealda K. Giger Kamhoeffner (nee Kadell) at Nashville, TN, who survives. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL; sang tenor with The Evangelical United Church of Christ Choir; JOY Singers; Highland Pistol and Rifle Club. Born and reared at Kankakee, IL; attended school at Kankakee up to the eighth grade; then attended Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School, just north of Kankakee, graduated in the class of 1956. Graduate of Illinois State Normal University (I.S.U.) in 1960; 1965 graduated from I.S.U., Normal, IL with a Masters degree. He taught math (1961 – 1965) at Chiddix Junior High School, Normal, IL; a principal (1965 – 1968) at Danvers High School, Danvers, IL; principal, teacher and coach (1968 – 1983) at Grantfork Elementary School, Grantfork, IL,; taught fourth through sixth grades (1983 – 1993) at Highland Elementary School, Highland, IL; retired in 1993; substitute teacher (1993 – 1995). He served with U.S. Army. He was a carpenter for James Elble in Wood River. He went into business for himself and later he worked for Shell Oil Refinery for 20 years and retired at the end of 2000. (nee Geiger) Woltering. On July 10, 1946, she married Robert T. Eilers at St. Rose Catholic Church. He passed away on November 20, 2005. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. Before her marriage, she was a Candy Striper with St. Joseph Hospital. After marriage, she and her husband live southeast of Highland in Sebastopol area. She and her husband renovated the old East Sugar Creek School House on Leroy Road and made it their home in 1950. She had lived all of her life on the same hectare of land (89 years). She was a graduate of Greenville High School in 1962. She then attended college receiving her Associate’s of Art Degree in Medical Records. She worked for Theodore Little, MD (1971 – 1972). She worked for St. Joseph Hospital for 23 years as a Medical Transcriptionist and as Director of the Medical Record Department. After working at St. Joseph Hospital, she worked for Hospice of Southern Illinois in Belleville for four years. She loved to travel. Judy had been to every continent except South America and Antarctica. She enjoyed spending time with her family and hanging out with her friends. Patricia A. Hill, age 74 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at her residence in Highland, IL. She was born on March 01, 1942, in East Saint Louis, IL, the daughter of Thomas and Ruth (nee Pratt) Holcomb. She was a member of Union Local at Proctor and Gamble. Pat was born at East St. Louis. At age 12 she moved to Caseyville. After her first marriage she lived at Dover, Delaware. She moved back to IL and lived in Granite City for 30 years. She moved to Highland in 1987 and worked at Proctor and Gamble in St. Louis for 31 years. She retired in 1996. She raised many beloved pets. She loved them and considered them her kids. They were Noby, Bear, Toby, Wrinkles, Charo, Harley Davidson, Charlie Bronson and Noname. She always drove sports cars, wore 11 rings, and enjoyed dancing. She and her second husband were Championship Dance Partners in the 1960’s in Granite City. Survivors include : Son – William D. Hill, Fairview Heights, IL Daughter – Barbara J. Joseph D. “Joe” Gamboa, age 55 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at his residence in rural Highland, IL. He was born November 20, 1960, in East St. Louis, IL, the son of Hipolito and Pauline (nee Steele) Gamboa. On May 30, 1987, he married Karen Lynn Sronce at Caseyville, IL. She survives. He was a member of US Steel Local 1899-Granite City; H.O.G. (Harley-Davidson Owners Group). Joe was born in East St. Louis, IL and grew up in Troy. He was a 1978 graduate of Triad High School. He had worked as a welder in East St. Louis for General Railroad. Later he worked in demolition for H&M Services. He then worked at US Steel in Granite City as a Crane Operator. She was born on Thursday, May 23, 1929, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Austin and Edith (nee Duncan) Bohnenstiehl. On Monday, November 27, 1950, she married Dale E. Nagel, at the E & R Church – Highland, IL, he passed away on Monday, April 25, 2016. She was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL; EvUCC Women’s Guild; Polka Club Ruth was born in Highland. She attended Country School. She worked for Highland Box Board Company. She operated a Dairy and Grain Farm with her husband east of Highland and they retired in 1975. She taught Sunday School at Evangelical United Church of Christ for 15 years. Ruth enjoyed her flower gardens; spending time with her grandchildren and family, playing cards and dancing.
