He was born on Tuesday, March 21, 1944, in Bloomington, IN, the son of Lloyd and Doris (nee Crider) Staley. He was a member of American Legion Post #665 – St. Jacob – Bussong-Mersinger, St. Jacob, IL. He was born and reared at Bloomington, IN; graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, IN, in 1962. He served with the US Army, with duty in the Pacific during the Vietnam War. He work for the airlines in Indianapolis as a baggage handler, TWA and later with American Airlines in St. Louis. He retired in mid 2000. He drove for First Student in his retirement for 5 to 6 years; later he worked as a manager for Spin-To-Win, Highland, IL. His hobby was his children. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He was born on Tuesday, November 2, 1937, in East Saint Louis, IL, the son of Oliver and Florence (nee Schuette) Bollman. On Saturday, October 9, 1965, he married Jo Ellen (nee Christ) Bollman at East St. Louis, IL. She survives in Highland, IL. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a Life member of Knights of Columbus #1580, Highland, IL. Donald was born in East St. Louis, IL. He graduated from Collinsville High School in 1955. He worked 30 years for the telephone company, started with Illinois Bell and retired with Ameritech, working at Collinsville, Edwardsville and Greenville. He and his wife had an orchard from 1976 to 1993, south of Highland on Buckeye Road, growing apples, peaches, plums and nectarines. He was a manager at the Highland Dairy Queen while in college. He had a long career in the lumber industry. He enjoyed golfing, mowing grass and played high school basketball. Gloria M. Barenfenger, age 86 of Alhambra, IL, died Monday, August 22, 2016, at Bethalto Care Center in Bethalto, IL. She was born on Wednesday, May 07, 1930, in Worden, IL, the daughter of Edward and Mary (nee Zirges) Barenfenger. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Prairietown, IL; Ladies Aid and Choir; Alhambra Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary (past secretary). She was born in Worden, IL; graduated from Worden High School in 1948. She affirmed her faith through the rite of confirmation on April 18, 1943. After graduation she started working as a secretary for U.S. Radiator Corp, Edwardsville, IL, for one and half years. She then worked as an account/bookkeeper for Illinois Lumber Co., Edwardsville, (wholesale division) for 32 years. She then worked for the Department of Agriculture in Edwardsville as a program assistant for 9 years and retired in December of 1995. She lived on a farm near Prairietown until 1972 when she built a new home and moved to Alhambra, IL. She moved to Villa Rose Senior Living Community, Bethalto, in 2013. She enjoyed Polka dancing; reading; growing flowers; faithful in her faith; spending time with family and friends. Rita A. “Re” Hardy, age 84 of Highland, IL, died Monday, August 22, 2016, at her residence in Highland, IL. She was born July 04, 1932, in Emmaus, PA, the daughter of Harold and Marguerite (nee Brude) Giering. On April 28, 1951, she married Robert Gene “Bob” Hardy in Piggott, AR. Hepassed away on April 18, 1993. She was a member of Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville Foundation[Board of Directors;President 2001-2003]; Highland Area Community Foundation [Board of Directors and Founding Member]; James S. McDonald USO-St. Louis [Lifetime Board Member]; American Legion Post 0665 [Life Member];. Re was born in Emmaus, PA and entered the US Air Force upon graduation from Emmaus High School. She attended Basic Training at Lackland, AFB in San Antonio, TX. She trained in Radio Communications at Scott AFB and was assigned to Norton AFB in San Bernadino, CA. After her service, she and her husband moved to the Belleville area except for a few years while he was stationed in the Philippines. They moved to Highland in 1977. When she was younger, she had been a professional singer with local bands and orchestras participating in many musical activities throughout the metro area.She had managed a family owned hobby shop in Belleville and had also created “Re-Bound Company” – a line of tennis clothes that were manufactured and distributed to sport outlets in the St. Louis area. Re was a member of the Daughter’s of the Nile at Ainad Temple in East Saint Louis – her husband had been Potentate in 1976. She was sewing chairman for items requisitioned by their National Chapter; she also sang in their choir. Re was married for 42 years to the late Bob Hardy, broadcaster with KMOX/CBS in St. Louis. Some of her accomplishments : James S. McDonnell USO at Lambert Airport [Board of Directors since 1981] She had served as Public Relations Chairman, Special Events Chairman for the Annual USO Golf Tournament. Re was recognized for her many efforts with special recognition: USO Special Award/Outstanding Contributions Award/Outstanding Achievement Award/National USO Best Year-round Public Relations Award; American Heart Association Award -1998; SIU-E Distinguished Service Award – 2006 She established and endowed the Bob Hardy Broadcast Journalism Scholarship at SIUE She had been a major sponsor of The Gardens at SIU-E. Larry D. Mills, age 54 of Crescent City, CA, died Friday, July 29, 2016, at 5 miles East of Arcata Airport, timber land; in Crannell, CA. He was born on Saturday, March 17, 1962, in Warner Robins, GA, the son of Jerry M. and Shirley J. (nee Holmes) Mills. On Friday, September 17, 1999, he married Trina L. Mills, nee Pace, who survives. He was a member of United Church of Christ of Marine. He was also a member of Marine Volunteer Fire Department (EMT while in the FD); Motor Heads; AOPA Organization. He was born at Warner Robins, GA; while growing up his father’s career was with the U.S. Air Force and they lived in many different places through out the country. In 1973 they moved to Marine, IL; he graduated from Triad High School in 1980. He flew gliders, helicopters, dual engine light aircraft and taught at Schafer Airport, St. Jacob, IL. He had flown in Alaska, North Dakota, Arizona and California. He worked for Cal-Ore Life Flight in northern California. He was an exceptional pilot with over 30 years of flying experience. He was a twelve year veteran of the Marine Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed music and was the drummer in the band “Wild Divine”. He enjoyed sailing; scuba diving; sky diving; riding his Sportster and Yamaha motorcycles; hiking; and karate. He had been a pit crew member at the Daytona 500. He had contracts with the US Army and Air Force to train pilots. Larry was truly a Renaissance man. He was a man of few words and many smiles; quick to listen-always happy to sit a while and swap stories; if you needed an extra hand with anything, he was your guy. Wilbert L. “Willie” Weis, age 80 of Pocahontas, IL, died Saturday, September 03, 2016, at Deceased’s Residence in Pocahontas, IL. He was born on Saturday, June 20, 1936, in Highland, IL, the son of John and Edna (nee Frisse) Weis. On Wednesday, August 17, 1960, he married Anna L. Weis nee Wilke at St. Rose, IL, who survives. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Pierron, IL; American Legion Lee Iten Post #439, Highland, IL; Iron Workers Local #392; Member and Past President of Madison County Chapter of the former NFO; Charter Member of Pierron Improvement Club (P.I.C.). Wilbert L. Weis was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Highland; he grew up on the Weis family farm northwest of Pierron, IL. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Pierron. Willie served with the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 with the Second Armored Calvary in Bamberg, Germany. He finished his reserve duty in 1965. Upon returning home, he married and he and Anna operated a dairy farm, until 1965. He briefly sold farm machinery, worked for Farmers Equipment in Trenton, worked at Wicks Organ Factory, Broadway Battery and Tire and Drda Electric. As a sideline, he raised hogs from 1973 into the mid-1980’s. In 1972, he started working part-time for the iron workers, became full-time shortly thereafter and retired in 1997. He enjoyed playing cards (Jass, Pinochle, Rummy, etc.); golfing, bowling, fishing/hunting and pitching horseshoes. (He started the league in Pierron and pitched for 43 years only missing one match.) He had also enjoyed boating and water skiing. He spent hours volunteering at Pierron Park and helping at the church. He was born September 10, 1924, in Obion, TN, the son of Homer and Nora (nee Dodson) Pruett. On February 07, 1956, he married Tommie Francis Spane in Peoria, Illinois. Shepassed away on June 16, 2009. He was a member of Church of Christ-East Peoria, IL. Mr. Pruett was born in Obion, TN where he grew up. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corp. from 1943 – 1945 with duty in Europe as part of the 8the Air Force. For over 35 years, he worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria in Material Control. Mr. & Mrs. Pruett moved to Highland, IL in 2001. He moved to the Alhambra Care Center in April or 2016. Always very active in church work, Billy had served as deacon for many years at Church of Christ in East Peoria. He enjoyed working on and maintaining cars. Mr. & Mrs. Pruett loved to travel, it was always a big joy in his life. They enjoyed spending time with family, and Billy was always helping others. Survivors include : Daughter – Jo C. Alvin was born on the family farm, east of Grantfork, IL. He lived all of his 84 years on Steiner ground. He attended Fairview Country School. He served with the U.S. Army in France as a Military Policeman. He returned to the family farm and work on the dairy farm with his father. He retired from dairying in 1978. He then raised grain on the farm until early 2000’s. He was a school bus driver for 18 years. He enjoyed playing cards (Jass every Tuesday for years). He enjoyed his family, traveling with his family and siblings. He was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan from when they were the St. Louis Browns. Nicholas R. “Nick” Sutton, age 33 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, September 15, 2016, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, IL. He was born on Monday, September 12, 1983, in Springfield, IL, the son of Ronald and Danette (nee Wescott) Sutton. Nick was born in Springfield, IL and grew up in Highland. He was a 2002 graduate of Highland High School. He played football and basketball in school. He was very active with Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Before and during high school he worked at Ponderosa. He has also worked at Harrah’s in St. Louis, Jimmy Johns in Edwardsville, Buffalo Wild Wings in O’Fallon and Edwardsville, Blue Owl in Kimswick, all in Restaurant Management. He was currently working as Director of Food and Beverage at Marriott St. Louis Airport. Steward O. Mitchell, age 98 of Highland, IL, died Friday, September 16, 2016, at Highland, IL. He was born on Tuesday, December 11, 1917, in Litchfield, IL, the son of Clarence and Belle (nee Hoover) Mitchell. He married Mary M. Mitchell, nee Gregory, Dec. 1950 at Walnut Grove, AR, who passed away on Friday, March 16, 2012. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL; United Auto Workers Local #31 at Kansas City, Kansas; VFW Post #5694, Highland, IL; Lee Iten Post #439-American Legion, Highland, IL; former member Masonic Orders. Steward was born near Litchfield, IL; at age 12 moved to West Alton, Missouri. He served with the US Navy during WWII; May 4, 1945, 85 miles north of Okinawa, the ship he was on, the USS Little, was destroyed by Kamikazes. He survived and received the Purple Heart; he also had received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon. He worked construction for 20 years and worked in the maintenance department at General Motors for 20 years. He retired in 1980. On Monday, October 22, 1973, she married Fernando M. “Fred” “Joe” Martinez at Belleville, IL, who survives. She was a member of Parkinson’s Support Group at Bond County Senior Center, Greenville, IL. Sharron was born and reared in Greenbrier, MO. She later moved to St. Louis in 1942. She was a 1959 graduate of Cahokia High School. She worked for Rawlings Sporting Goods in St. Louis as Executive Secretary for 10 years. She worked for Mallinckrodt Chemical in St. Louis. She moved to Highland in 1981. She loved to dance. She enjoyed reading newspapers, magazines and working crossword puzzles. She spoiled her daughter and grandchildren. She traveled to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Italy, Paris, Wales, London, Puerto Vallarta and all 50 states including Hawaii. He married Mary L. Dykstra, nee Landolt, she survives in St. Louis, MO. He was a member of Missouri National Education Association, recipient of an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. Tom had two passions in life: He was a loyal Mizzou football fan, holding season tickets for over 40 years, and an adoring father and grandfather. James R. Lyerla Sr.
James R. Lyerla, Sr., age 96 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, November 08, 2016, at Deceased’s Residence in Highland, IL. He was born on Thursday, January 22, 1920, in Hagarstown, IL, the son of Wood and Bessie (nee Browning) Lyerla. On Sunday, August 22, 1943, he married Mary E. Lyerla (nee Gillespie) at Pocahontas, IL, who passed away on Saturday, April 06, 2013. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Pocahontas, IL, 50+ year member; Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers; American Legion Post 365, Collinsville, IL. He was born in Hagarstown, IL. His family moved to Greenville, IL, in 1929 and subsequently moved to Pocahontas, IL, in 1933 where he began high school, graduating from Pocahontas High School in 1937. He attended Greenville College and McKendree College. He taught rural school in Bond County for two years. After marriage he and his wife lived in Collinsville, IL, where they reared their four sons. He was drafted into the US Army and served active duty during WWII. After returning in late 1946, he worked at the Army Finance Center in St. Louis, then Granite City Depot before going to work for the NY Central Railroad as a locomotive fireman in 1948. He loved working for the RR and was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1953 and worked in this capacity for the NY Central and Southern Pacific railways until his retirement in 1981. After retirement he enjoyed traveling by Amtrak with his wife to see their sons in California and Wisconsin. He loved entertaining his many grandchildren. He was an avid basketball fan, faithfully following the Collinsville Kahoks and University of Illinois. He remained a devoted Cardinal Baseball fan until his passing. He and his wife moved into Legacy Place, Highland, May 10, 2010, as the first residents. Survivors include: Son – James R. Clarence E. “Chuck” Varney
Clarence E. “Chuck” Varney of Highland, IL died at age 72 on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Highland Health Care Center in Highland, IL. Dad was born the son of Englin Varney and Corba Varney Pittman on Monday, July 10, 1944, in Verdunville, WV. They raised him in the town of Beckley, WV where he went to Mount Hope High School. In 1961 his high school football team won the state of West Virginia’s AA State Championship. He then graduated in 1962 and served active duty in the US Marine Corps. He then met and married Marilyn Schlife Varney Dillingham in Washington DC while working for Eastern Airlines. He later transferred to Eastern Airlines in the St Louis, MO area. His next job was with Frisco Railroad Lines where he learned the skills to work for his final occupation which was with Anheuser Busch Brewing Company on their Manufactures Railway Company (MRS) railroad division where he worked as a car inspector. After working at AB for many years he decided to take an early retirement. In his middle age years he enjoyed playing “very competitive” softball and football with the teams of the apartment complexes where he lived which were “Woodhollow” and “Spanish Trace” located in Maryland Heights, MO. He definitely enjoyed life to the fullest during these years. He finally settled down later in Highland, IL where he had many friends to visit with daily. Those who knew him knew he loved drinking a few beers and watching sports on TV all day long. His favorite teams were the Nebraska Cornhuskers, West Virginia Mountaineers and St Louis Cardinals unless of course they were playing the Cincinnati Reds.
