Mary M. “Marge” Hess

Mary M. “Marge” Hess, age 91 of Marine, IL, died Thursday, January 07, 2016, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. She was born July 09, 1924, in Breese, IL, the daughter of Paul and Verena (nee Krebs) Fischer. On Saturday, September 06, 1947, she married Vincent Paul Hess who passed away February 13, 2000. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. She was also a member of St. Elizabeth Altar Society, Ladies Auxiliary to Am. Legion Becker-Reding Post #0702, Madison County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Hess was born in Breese and grew up in both Breese and Carlyle. She attended Sacred Heart Academy School in Belleville, earning a degree in English. She taught for a year before she was married and they moved northeast of Marine, where she has lived ever since. She was happy to be a farmer’s wife, taking pride in raising over 500 chickens at one time. She was an avid reader and spent many hours helping her children and grandchildren with their education. She loved to grow flowers and talk politics and was a Cardinals Baseball fan. Survivors include : Son – Vincent P. Maynard O. Niggli

Maynard Orville Niggli, age 88 of Highland, IL, died Monday, January 11, 2016, at his residence in Highland, IL. He was born on October 29, 1927, in Grantfork, IL, the son of William and Elda (nee Wiesenmeyer) Niggli. On June 14, 1952, he married Gloria Louise “Dode” Niggli, nee Hundsdorfer who passed away on February 10, 1994. He was a former member of the Grantfork Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Niggli was born and raised on a family farm in Grantfork, Illinois. He served with the US Army, active duty during World War II. He lived on the family farm and was a livestock and grain farmer until he moved to Highland in 1971. He also worked as a mechanic for General Tire in Highland and later in the maintenance department for Terra Properties in Highland. He had a summer home on Governor Bond Lake in Greenville, IL, and enjoyed spending time boating, sking and fishing, He enjoyed tending to his large gardens. Laura J. Verfurth

Laura J. Verfurth, age 52 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. She was born May 24, 1963, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of David and Joanne (nee O’Connell) Castillon. On September 26, 1981, she married Kelly Michael Verfurth who survives in Highland, IL. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. Laura was born in St. Louis, MO and at age 6 her family moved to Springfield, MO. She grew up there and graduated from Springfield Catholic School in 1981. She married her school sweetheart Kelly after graduating. They moved to Memphis, TN in 1989, and moved to Highland in 1994. She had worked at the Highland Middle School in the Cafeteria. She also worked as a cashier at Tru Buy and as a Pharmacy Tech at Family Pharmacy. Laura had many interests. She liked to sew, cook, do crafts, scrapbook, garden, listening to country music, camping, being outdoors and photography. She loved her children and her grandchildren. Glenda June Grodeon

Glenda June Grodeon, age 75 of Highland, IL, died Saturday, January 16, 2016, at her residence in Highland, IL. She was born October 28, 1940, in Joppa, IL, the daughter of Glen and Iola (nee Walbright) Sutfin. On June 16, 1962, she married Brent N. Grodeon nee who survives. She was a member of Sunrise United Methodist Church. She was also a former member of 1st Congregational Chuch in Highland for 40 years. June grew up in Joppa and Metropolis and she graduated from Metropolis High School in 1958. She attended SIU Carbondale and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1962. She worked 2 years in Central IL at Clinton and started in Highland Schools in August of 1964, teaching 2nd grade. She taught 32 years in Highland before retirement. In 2005 she and her husband moved to O’Fallon, MO to be near their son. They moved to Trenton, IL in 2010, and returned to Highland in December of 2014. In retirement she enjoyed being a homemaker, and being with her family. She collected antiques, enjoyed shopping and liked arts and crafts. Survivors include : Husband – Brent N. Carol L. Dauderman

Carol L. Dauderman, age 82 of Alhambra, IL, died Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. She was born on Monday, December 18, 1933, in Hillsboro, IL, the daughter of Irvin and Frances (nee Roseman) Barnes. On Sunday, June 29, 1952, she married Robert M. Dauderman who survives. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Alhambra, IL; Salem UCC Women’s Guild; American Legion Auxiliary Post #1147, Alhambra; Alhambra Community Club; and Illinois Funeral Directors Association. Mrs. Dauderman was born in Hillsboro, Illinois and later moved to Alhambra, Illinois in 1943. She graduated from Highland High School in 1951. She worked for Alhambra Grain and Feed while a sophomore in High School. After graduation she worked at First National Bank in Highland. From 1952-1953 she worked for Cluett and Peabody in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1953, she returned to Alhambra Grain and Feed while her husband, Bob was in the service and until pregnant with her first daughter, Susan. She then helped Bob with the funeral business. About 1980, Carol became a realtor for Schlemer Realty, then Eagle Realty. From 1963-1985, she helped Bob with Galaxy Restaurant. From 1987-1990, she worked for Landmark Bank in Troy. In 1990, she went to work for Madison County Housing Authority and retired in 1997. She received her Funeral Director’s license and helped Bob operate Dauderman Mortuary. Carol enjoyed genealogy, flower beds, gardening, cross word puzzles, her family, and her home. Judith Ann Nottmeier, age 73 of Staunton, IL, died Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Community Memorial Hospital in Staunton, IL. She was born on May 26, 1942, in East St. Louis, IL, the daughter of Henry and Viola (nee Gentsch) Mentel. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, IL and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo, IL. Judith was born in East St. Louis, IL, and grew up in Waterloo, IL. She graduated from Waterloo High School and then received an undergraduate degree in Education from SIU-Carbondale. She taught at Columbia Elementary School in Columbia, IL, until her retirement. In her retirement, she moved to Staunton, IL, where she was a babysitter and also worked at Steinmann Trucking for a short time. Eddie L. Tinnea, age 82 of Greenville, IL, died Friday, January 22, 2016, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville, IL. He was born on Tuesday, September 19, 1933, in Westervelt, IL, the son of Eddie and Clara (nee Propeck) Tinnea. He was a member of American Veterans Post 140, Greenville, IL. Eddie was born at Westervelt, IL. He served with the US Navy from May 13, 1953 to May 12, 1958, active duty during the Korean War; then with the US Air Force from May 29, 1958 to May 28, 1962 as a SSGT. He helped at the Highland Animal Shelter and at the local school crossings. Joan was born in Highland, IL and graduated St. Paul High School in 1947. She attended Brown’s Business College. She was very active with her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sport and academic activities. She had a life long hobby with her husband of antiquing. Clarence F. Plocher

Clarence F. Plocher, age 97 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, February 04, 2016, at Legacy Place in Highland, IL. He was born on Sunday, September 15, 1918, in Highland, IL, the son of Adolph J. and Rosa C. (nee Hitz) Plocher. On Tuesday, November 19, 1946, he married Marie A. Plocher nee Poettker who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Lee Iten Post #439, American Legion – Highland; VFW Post #5694 – Highland; Helvetia Sharpshooters Society; Jamestown Coon Hunters Association (original member). Clarence was born at Highland and grew up on the farm southeast of Highland. He worked at St. Louis for Emerson Electric. He served with the U. S. Navy during WW II and participated in the battle of Midway. When he returned from the service, he worked as a body man at Highland Body Shop, then purchased the body shop in 1946 and owned and operated it until 1978. He owned Lakeview Stables and bred, raised and sold Quarter horses. He also raised Beef cattle and Britney Spaniels. He farmed in his retirement. Andrew was born and grew up in St. Rose, IL. He attended St. Rose grade school and graduated from Aviston High School. He worked at the Alton Box Board before entering the US Army and after his honorable discharge. He served with the US Army with active duty during the Korean War. He later purchased his father’s farm, NW of St. Rose and farmed for over 30 years. He lived on the farm from 1955 to 1991 when he and his wife moved to Highland. He worked for the US Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier for 20 years. He volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital in Highland and was recognized with 2000 volunteer hours. He was a former member of the GUTS Church, Tulsa, OK. Jay was born at Highland and raised in Grantfork, IL; he graduated from Highland High School in 1977. He was an EMT for the City of Highland for several years; he started working for MIREX Corp as a field technician for copy machines. In 1989 he moved to Tulsa, OK, to work for a copying company; in 1995 he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was service manager for U.S. Cellular; in 1997 he moved back to Tulsa, OK, and worked as a National Repair Manager for U.S. Cellular; in 2000 he worked for G.E.F. as a field technician on wide format printers; his current job he started in 2011 for EFI as a field engineer. In 2013 he returned to Highland. He loved NASCAR, his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Jr.. He enjoyed woodworking and had just purchased an oversize router. Elmer H. Frank

Elmer H. Frank, age 82 of Alhambra, IL, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Deceased’s Residence in Alhambra, IL. He was born on Tuesday, February 13, 1934, in Alhambra, IL, the son of Clemens and Alma (nee Ohren) Frank. On Saturday, July 21, 1956, at Grantfork United Church of Christ, Grantfork, IL, he married Joan M. Frank nee Ulrich who survives. He was a member of VFW Post #5694-Highland; Laborer Hall #397-Granite City. Mr. Frank was born in Alhambra Township on Fruit Road and grew up there. He actively served with the United States Army during the Korean War. After the war, he returned to the family farm and later was married. He and his wife lived in Highland, Grantfork, and Alhambra. He was a laborer out of Laborers Local 397, Granite City; later he was the laborer for the Illinois American Water Works in Granite City, retiring after 26 years of service. He was proud of his 60-year membership with the Laborers Union. He and his wife leased their farmland. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his red pick-up truck, and cutting grass with his John Deere lawn mower. Survivors include: Wife – Joan M. Yvonne M. A. “Bonnie” Rutz, age 75 of Pocahontas, IL, died Friday, April 01, 2016, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville, IL. She was born on Thursday, April 25, 1940, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Wilbur E. and Lenore (nee Gall) Frey. On Saturday, January 28, 1961, she married Ronald J. “Chief” Rutz at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, who survives. She was a member of Saint Gertrude Catholic Church, Grantfork, IL, Altar Sodality of the Church(Treasurer); Helvetia Sharpshooters Society (Honorary Member); Catholic Fraternal Life (CFL); Grantfork Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary(Charter Member); Clinton County Live Stock Barn (Secretary). Mrs. Rutz was born at Highland, IL and grew up on the family farm northeast of Pocahontas, IL. She was a 1958 graduate of St.Paul High School in Highland. After High School, she had worked for Moseman Plumbing in Highland (later became Houseman Supply Company). She also worked part-time at Homer Rusteberg, CPA; As a Special Education Bus Driver for Zobrist Bus Lines for 10 years; in maintenance for Zobrist Coach Lines for 8 years; and at Grantfork Meat Market for over 10 years. She and her husband operated a farm east of Grantfork where she drove tractor & combine and did all the things that a farmer’s wife did – large garden, cooked for the help, fed the animals,.. Bonnie also baked wedding cakes and other baked goods for weddings for 18 years. She enjoyed quilting and had made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. For over 50 years she had been active in the Grantfork Homecoming Parade – planning/building floats/coordinating.
