She attended Bethalto High School, Bethalto, Illinois. She lived in Colorado for a short time; later lived in Belleville and Highland. Christ J. “Sonny” Schwarz, age 79 of Grantfork, IL, died Thursday, March 05, 2015, at his residence. He was born July 19, 1935, in Highland, IL, the son of Christian and Marie O. (nee Keller) Schwarz. On December 11, 1971, he married Emily Rose Knebel who survives. He was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus #1510 (Life Member); Grantfork Volunteer Fire Department-Retired; Madison County Farm Bureau. Sonny was born in Highland and grew up north of Grantfork. He served six months in the United States Army reserves. After his father’s death, when Sonny was the age of 21, he began taking care of the family farm. He was “always” a farmer (usually grain) and still harvested a crop in the Fall of 2014.He had also worked part-time for Leef Township for over 25 years.He loved having a large family and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. Adolph W. “Brum” Brunnworth, age 83 of Hamel, IL, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, IL. He was born October 29, 1931, in Alhambra, IL, the son of William and Sophie (nee Steinmann) Brunnworth. On September 26, 1954, he married Marlene Ann Meyer who passed away August 14, 2010. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church. He was also a former member of Hamel Township Board. Brum was born in Alhambra. He had worked as a Laborer and drove a truck much of his working career. He retired from Klueter Brothers Concrete Products in 1993 after 21 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. Cornelia Marie “Connie” Rehberger, age 100 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Legacy Place in Highland, IL. She was born on Friday, December 18, 1914, in Mascoutah, IL, the daughter of Ralphael A. and Mathilda Caroline (nee Haas) Rehberger. Connie was born south of Lebanon, IL. She was Valedictorian of Lebanon Community High School in 1932. She received her Bachelor’s Degree at University of Illinois, and taught at a country school and high school in Hardin, IL. She started working in 1941 for General Electric and worked there for 39 years, retiring in the Summer of 1980. She lived in Schenectady, NY and Scotia, NY; then move to Highland in 2011. She enjoyed traveling especially to numerous European Countries, Africa, Caribbean, Panama Canal and Canada including Nova Scotia. She enjoyed gardening, community theater, playhouse theater and Saratoga summer performing arts theater. She also did volunteer work in the community. Arline H. Jaconis, age 91 of Collinsville, IL, died Monday, March 23, 2015, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL. She was born March 19, 1924, in Old Ripley Twp. IL, the daughter of Harry S. and Marie (nee Heintz) Landolt. On February 18, 1947, she married James Stanley Jaconis who passed away on December 13, 1983. She was a member of Senior Citizen’s Club of Marine; Former Member of Highland Squares; Former Member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church-Grantfork, IL; Former Member of St. Elizabeth Catholi Church-Marine, IL. Mrs. Jaconis was born near Old Ripley, IL, attended IXL Country School, and helped with the family farm. In 1942, she worked in St. Louis, MO at DePaul Hospital and then at L.M. Stewart, Inc. She and her husband moved back to Illinois in 1968 and lived on Route 140, north of Grantfork, IL. In 1991, she moved to Marine, IL where she worked part-time at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church as a housekeeper. She moved to Legacy Place in 2010 and then to Hitz Memorial Home in 2014.She and her husband enjoyed square-dancing for many years. She also enjoyed quilting; making a quilt for all of her children and most of her grandchildren. Working in the yard was a favorite past-time and she was an excellent cook and baker. Mrs. Heim was born in Highland and grew up at Wisetown, Bond County, IL. She worked at Deutch Brothers Powdered Egg Factory before her marriage and raised her family. In 1970, she went to work at Arrow Group in Breese and retired in 1989. She enjoyed reading, square dancing, flowers, houseplants, and embroidery. Milton C. Heim, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, April 08, 2015, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. He was born September 10, 1925, in Highland, IL, the son of John R. and Rose (nee Voegele) Heim. On May 11, 1950, he married Lucille Catherine Meskil who passed away on Wednesday, April 01, 2015. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Teamsters Local 525 – Alton, IL; American Legion Post 439. Mr. Heim was born east of Highland on St. Rose Road and lived there for six months. He then moved to St. Morgan (South of Highland), until his marriage. He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1944.On October 2, 1946, he joined the US Air Force at Scott Air Force Base with duty in Japan. On October 6, 1949 he was honorably discharged at Chanute Air Force Base as a Staff Sergeant.For three years, he worked at the Highland Box Board and for nine and a half years at Highland Supply.He then worked for the State of Illinois for 29 years, until retiring in 1990. In his retirement, he worked as a crossing guard at Highland Elementary School for over 14 years. Hilda M. Ramach nee Dieselhorst,91, of Glen Carbon, IL passed away on April 9, 2015 at Eden Village in Glen Carbon, IL. She was born on January 30, 1924, the only child of William and Alma (Suhre) Dieselhorst. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Ramach and they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary last November. She is survived by sons, Kenneth Ray (Janice) Ramach of Devner, CO, Alan L. (Judy) Ramach of St. Charles, MO, and a daughter, Betty J. (Bill) Ewen of Franklin, TN. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Hilda was blessed with the love and care from her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hilda was an outstanding friend to all and a successful homemaker. She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. She was an active member of Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra, IL, long-time member of the Sewing Circle group who enjoyed gathering for breakfast more than sewing, and enjoyed the activities at the Eden Village Assisted Living Center. She traveled widely in the U.S. to visit children & grandchildren, took a trip to Japan, and enjoyed a cruise at the Hawaiian Islands. She enjoyed all aspects of her life. Special thanks to the Eden Village Center for their loving care, planned excursions, and group activities which made Hilda’s last 5 years of living there very enjoyable and rewarding. Another thanks to the Eden Village Hospice Care Center for their excellent care in her last days. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 25 at 10:00 am at Eden Village Senior Living Building in the Community Room at 300 S. Station Rd, Glen Carbon, IL. Celebration of Life Services to immediately follow at 11:00 am. Services to be conducted by Pastor Jerry Amiri, of Salem United Church of Christ. (nee Dresch) Reinacher. On Monday, August 25, 1975, he married Eileen T. Tebbe who survives. He was a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ, Grantfork, IL and former Grantfork Jaycee. Tom was born at Highland, IL. He grew up in Grantfork and graduated from Highland High School in 1969. He worked for B-Line in Highland, now Eaton B-Line, as a forklift driver. After 40 years of service he retired January 04, 2013. He was an avid gardener with his father and he carried on that tradition. He grew sunflowers, many different colors and heights. He won many ribbons at the Madison and Bond County Fairs for his sunflowers and vegetables. He formerly bowled at Hi-Topp and Grantfork Bowling Alley. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes and going to dirt track racing at the Highland Speedway. He liked telling jokes and John Deere tractors were “his thing”. Survivors include: Wife – Eileen T. Dicus (nee Leroy) who survives in Highland. He was a member of Highland Community Church. Mr. Dicus was born in Lawrenceburg, TN and graduated from Frank Hughes High School in 1951. After graduation, he ran a dairy farm and then moved to Highland the same year. He worked for Williams Chevrolet for many years, retiring in early 1970’s from Gentemen Chevrolet. He then worked at his home-based auto repair body shop. He loved working on vehicles. He worked all the time. He retired from working in 2012. He loved being outdoors, especially gardening. Orville L. Voegele, age 76 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. He was born January 17, 1939, in Highland, IL, the son of Robert and Emily (nee Walter) Voegele. On June 11, 1959, he married Dorothy Amelia “Dottie” Buehler who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Usher’s Club-St. Paul Church; Highland Knights of Columbus #1580; KC 4th Degree Assembly #0231; Heartland Polar Riders (Snowmobile Club); Madison County Farm Service Agency (9 yrs. on the Board of Directors). Orville was born in Highland, IL and grew up on the family farm in Marine, IL. He moved to Highland and attended St. Paul Catholic School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army with active duty for six months and in the reserves for 7 1/2 months. He worked at Clover Farm Store as a butcher and also helped with the family farm. He started farming full-time in Trenton, IL and then in Highland in the late 1960s as a grain farmer and raised beef cattle. He was still active on the farm with his sons. For years, he was a meat cutter during deer season at Food Land, Korte Meats, and Trenton Processing. He enjoyed snowmobile trips to Wisconsin and also traveled to Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Brazil, Hawaii, The Caribbean, and Alaska. He loved to dance and listen to Polka music and play Euchre with the 7 a.m. Early Morning Euchre Club. He and his wife played in several other card clubs. David V. Koch, 78, of Carbondale, Formerly of Highland, passed away 9:45 p.m., Thursday, December 31, 2015, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, with his wife and children at his side. David was born February 19, 1937, in Highland, Illinois, son of Victor Hugo Koch and Eunice Matter Koch. He graduated from Highland High School in 1955. David attended college at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism in 1959. David began his professional career as a reporter and columnist for the Dayton Journal Herald. David came to Carbondale in the early 1960s as part of a team of newspaper professionals to manage and guide the transition of the campus newspaper to a daily paper. While in Carbondale, David received a master’s degree in English from Southern Illinois University. He then taught English for several years at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. David returned to Carbondale in 1970, joining the faculty of Morris Library as Rare Books Librarian. In 1980, David became Director (and later, Associate Dean) of the Special Collections Research Center, retiring in 2005. As Director of Special Collections, David nurtured both the collections and the researchers. He was a strong advocate and leader in the transition of material to computer access. David encouraged the growth of the Southern Illinois local history collections. Other significant collections which grew under his watch include the Irish Literary Renaissance, the Ralph E. McCoy Freedom of the Press collection, the Twentieth Century Philosophy collections (especially the Open Court Press), and books, manuscripts, and other material of the Expatriate era between the world wars, especially that of Kay Boyle, who was also an academic research interest of his. David is survived by his wife, Loretta Koch, whom he married on August 25, 1979, in New Harmony, Indiana; his children John (Jean) Koch, Victor Koch, and Elizabeth Koch, and grandchildren Jeremy Koch and Brittany (Matthew) Blaise. Also surviving are his sisters, Carol McCarty and Susan Newsom; John’s mother, Noel Vaughn, and Victor’s mother, Carolyn Koch. David was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Robert McCarty and Floyd Newsom. Graveside funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 in Highland City Cemetery, Highland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Earthwatch Institute (114 Western Avenue, Boston, MA 02134), the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, St. Francis CARE Animal Shelter, or the Faith United Methodist Church in Vergennes. Emil Junior Paul, age 83 of Edwardsville, IL, died Monday, January 04, 2016, at University Nursing & Rehab Center in Edwardsville, IL. He was born on Monday, July 11, 1932, in Edwardsville, IL, the son of Emil and Jessie (nee Bird) Paul. On Friday, August 08, 1952, he married Patsy Jane Paul, nee Hendricks. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #99 AF & AM, Edwardsville, IL; and a former Fire Chief of Hamel Volunteer Fire Dept.. Emil was born three miles north of Edwardsville, IL, and grew up in Edwardsville. He worked at Model Bakery Shop, Bethalto, IL. He served with the US Army, active duty from Dec. 1952 to June 1954 during the Korean War and was stationed in Europe. He worked at Union Tank Car Co., Chicago, IL; was a superintendent on heavy construction sites; 20 plus years as Hamel Public Works Director, Hamel, IL. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood working and loved his grandchildren. Survivors include: Son – Michael E. (Dee) Paul, Edwardsville, IL Son – Kevin R. Paul, Edwardsville, IL Daughter – Marilyn K.
