Joseph G. “Butch” Geiger, Jr., age 77 of Highland, IL, died Friday, October 24, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. He was born February 22, 1937, in Highland, IL, the son of Joseph Felix and Ida Bernadine (nee Woltering) Geiger, Sr. On Saturday, June 18, 1960, he married JoAnn Rosalie Geiger (nee Eilers) who passed away on October 10, 2012. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church where he had served on the Finance and Community Relations Committee; Charter Member of Highland Jaycee – past Chairman of the Board; Charter Member of Highland Moose Lodge #2479; Knights of Columbus Council #1580 in Highland, IL; Madison County Fair Board – Past President twice; Madison County Pork Producers; Madison County Ag Council; 4H Club Leader – 30 years; Helvetia Township Trustee and current Supervisor; Coached Optimist Basketball; Coached Khoury League Baseball; 8th grade Religious Teacher at St. Paul Church over 10 years; Played fast pitch softball for many years. Joseph grew up on the family farm, Southeast of Highland, which has been in their family since 1892 and is registered as a IL Centennial Farm. Hew was a 1955 graduate of St. Paul School. He served in the US Army. When he returned home, he raised grain and livestock. He was still active with the daily farm operation. He enjoyed watching sports, following his children and grandchildren with their sports, and liked helping others any way he could. Survivors include : Son – Richard A. She was born on Friday, October 19, 1951, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Lester E. and Agnes I. (nee Jacober) Kirstein. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary to Post 5694 – Highland, IL. Carol was born at Highland; grew up in Highland. She graduated from St. Paul High School; she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from SIUE. She taught Special Education. She worked for Basler Electric; Department of Motor Vehicles in Edwardsville. She worked at St. Louis as a Loan Specialist for the last 20 years. She loved to cooking, playing computer games, Sci-Fi videos and spending time with her children. She was loved deeply and will be greatly missed by her children. Eugene “Popeye” Kovach, age 86 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, November 04, 2014, in Highland, IL. He was born on Sunday, September 30, 1928, in Pocahontas, IL, the son of Louis and Lena (nee Toth) Kovach. On Saturday, June 16, 1956, he married Mary Lee Kovach (nee Long) who survives. He was also a member of IBEW Local 309-Collinsville, IL (52 plus years member); VFW Post 5694-Highland, IL. He was born at Pocahontas, IL, grew up there and graduated from Pocahontas High School. He served with the US Army from Sept. 1946 to Jan. 1948; active duty during WWII in Japan. He operated a Texaco Gas Station in Pocahontas; attended Electricians School and later worked many years as a electrician for Egizii Electric, Springfield, IL. He worked from 1972 to 1990 for Kovach Electric, Pocahontas, IL; then operated LJL Equipment Company from 1991 to the early 2000. He and his wife moved from Pocahontas to Highland, IL, in 1966. He enjoyed fishing in the area lakes and ponds. He and his wife were avid snow mobile riders until 2008. They had a home in Northern Wisconsin where they spent time in the summer and winter. Clarence R. “Sled” Frey, age 78 of Highland, IL, died Friday, November 07, 2014, at Highland Health Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born January 26, 1936, in Highland, IL, the son of Albert and Margaret (nee Allen) Frey. On June 16, 1962, he married Grace Florence von Hatten who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Highland Optimist Club (Past President and Life Member) – Knights of Columbus Council 1580 Highland – Helvetia Sharpshooters Society. Clarence was born in Highland, Il and a graduate of St. Paul School in 1953. He worked for U. P. S. and then for Linenfelser Lumber Co. in Highland until his retirement in 1999. He was an avid golfer and a Course Marshall at Bent Oak Golf Course in Breese. He also loved cooking and barbequing. He volunteered and cooked with the Knights of Columbus at St. Paul and Kirchenfest. He liked to travel and play cards. Survivors include : Wife – Grace F. Peggy Ruth Malina, age 69 of Highland, IL, died Monday, November 10, 2014, at her residence in Highland, IL. She was born on Thursday, September 13, 1945, in Mounds, IL, the daughter of Charles and Ruby (nee Littell) Wehrenberg. On May 27, 1967, she married James S. Malina, who passed away on November 30, 1997. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, JOY Singers of Highland, and a former member of St. John United Church of Christ in Trenton. Mrs. Malina was born at Mounds, IL, and grew up there. In 1963, she graduated from Mounds Township High School. She graduated from McKendree College in 1967 and later attended SIU-E. She was a 4th and 5th grade elementary school teacher. She began teaching at Grantfork, IL, and later taught at Highland, IL, retiring in 2001. She loved to travel and was “gone more than she was at home”, traveling to Alaska, New York, and all over the USA. She enjoyed visiting with her family and trips to The Muny in St. Louis. She sang in her church choir and volunteered for Highland Area Christian Service Ministries. She lived in Trenton, IL, until moving to Highland in 2005. Survivors include: Son – James S. He worked as a mechanic for years and also did custodial work. He was injured on the job in O’Fallon, IL over three years ago and has been recovering from the injury ever since. Anthony M. “Tony” Frey, age 77 of Highland, IL, died Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Saint Luke’s Hospital-West in Chesterfield, MO. He was born on Saturday, October 30, 1937. On Saturday, May 16, 1964, he married Velta M. Frey (nee Kantner) who passed away on Friday, November 28, 1997. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL; Highland Saddle Club-Highland, IL; Gateway Racking Horse Assoc.; Teamster Local 600 – Maryland Heights, MO. Tony was born southeast of Pierron, IL, he attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School. He was a farm hand, after marriage he worked as a dock hand, “spotter” and driver for Local 600, Maryland Heights, MO. He worked for Middle West Trucking, TMX, ANR, PTL and Beaufort Trucking. He retired in 1993. In his retirement he helped Scott Frey and Alvin and Keith Frey with their farm operations and worked at Korte Meat Processing. He raised animals, chickens, ducks, horses, cattle, rabbits, geese and showed Racking Horses on his five acres. There were two special cats Fluffy and Tuffy. He harvested 800 pounds of pecans this past year. He played Santa Claus for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outside, chopping wood, the St. Louis Cardinals and watching WWE on TV. He loved driving Scott Frey’s big green Steiger tractor. He loved his grandchildren and was admired and loved by everyone. Helen Milda Hundsdorfer, age 80 of Highland, IL, died Monday, November 17, 2014, at her residence in Highland, IL. She was born on Monday, April 2, 1934, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Robert O. and Milda M. (nee Reinacher) Bargetzi. On Saturday, August 7, 1954, she married Donald Leo Hundsdorfer who survives. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. She was also a member of V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary to Post # 5694-Highland, Illinois (Past President); Evangelical United Curch of Christ (Mrs. Hundsdorfer served on many church boards); Woodmen of the World Camp #6049 (long-time member of this ladies group); Highland Bowling Association (35 year member, served as President several times); Over-40 Softball League; and Senior Olympics in Softball. Mrs. Hunsdorfer was born in Highland, Illinois. She grew up in Highland and graduated from Highland High School in 1952. She worked at Alton Box Company in Highland as a receptionist for 4 years, reared her family and when her youngest started school she started working part-time at Hug’s Men & Boys Wear in Highland. She worked there for 12 years as her children went through school. She then worked at Jakel’s Manufacturing for several years as a bookkeeper and was an Office Manager for Journal Newspapers of Southern Illinois, Belleville, for 10 years. She also worked at Basler Electric in Highland for a year before retiring in 1993. She was very athletic and enjoyed golf. She was well-known for her softball and bowling skills. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She and her husband enjoyed motorcycle riding for many years, but had not ridden with him since the early 1990’s. From 2005 to 2008, she went on road trips to Wisconsin, Georgia, and Arkansas on the motorcycle. She enjoyed working in her flower garden every year and her constant companion was her dog “Bismarck”. (nee Keilbach) Weiss. On August 28, 1947, she married Leland C. “Barney” Bornhauser who passed away on June 23, 1989. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Aux. Post 5694 – Highland (Life Member); Disabled American Veterans (Life Member); American Ex POW (Life Member & past Commander); Highland Home Kitchen Band. Elaine was born South of Highland, in the Sebastopol Area. There, she grew up on the family farm. She had worked at Moulton-Bartley Shoe Factory and Alton Box Co. She then attended Beauty Academy in East St. Louis and ran Elaine’s Beauty Salon in Highland for 35 years, until retiring in 1993. After retiring, she lived on Suppiger Lane and later at Highland Home. She has been in the nursing home since October 2013. She enjoyed gardening, and liked to Crochet and spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the VFW she helped with Friday Fish Fry’s, Blood Drives and Bingo. She was born June 22, 1926, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Edwin J. and Elizabeth M. (nee Ims) Donnelly. She married Preston Shinn on July 31, 1948 at Grantfork, IL. He passed away March 25, 1967. She later married Robert R. Schwarz at Highland, IL on June 8, 1974 and he passed away April 12, 2002. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ-Highland, IL; Daughters of the American Revolution-Silver Creek Chapter-Highland, IL; and Quilters of the EvUCC. Mrs. Schwarz was born northwest of Highland, IL in the area known as Deck’s Prairie. She grew up there. A 1944 graduate of Highland High School; Mrs. Schwarz had worked for over thirty years for the Department of Defense as a Federal Supply Clerk, first at the U.S. Army Depot in Granite City, IL and then in St. Louis, MO. She retired in 1983. She enjoyed genealogy, quilting and gardening. She also worked at restoring and maintaining Giger Cemetery. Jon L. Sugg, 71, of Highland, died Wednesday November 26, 2014, at Faith Care Center in Highland. Jon was born in Highland Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 1943, youngest child of Marion and Helen (Zbinden) Sugg of Pocahontas. On April 24, 1965, he married Grace Loebel. Married nearly 50 years, Jon still referred to wife Grace as “My Bride”. She survives in Highland. Other survivors include daughter Margaret (Thomas) Wickenhauser of Edwardsville, son Andrew (Susan) Sugg of Highland, and daughter Natalie (John C. II) Rankin of Ballwin, MO, and grandchildren Emily (fiancé Payton Blaylock) Cook, Jon Wickenhauser, Claire Wickenhauser, Eve Sugg, Mark Sugg, Allison Thornton, Samuel Thornton, Meghan Wickenhauser, John C. Rankin III, and Kristin Rankin. Also surviving are siblings, Joan Swofford of Carlyle, Donna Swofford of Greenville and Roger (Charlotte) Sugg of River Forest, IL., along with numerous nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by nephew Thomas Swofford, and brothers in law, William Swofford and Robert Swofford. Jon was raised in Pocahontas where he attended grade school. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1961, attended Greenville College and Southern Illinois University, and graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1965. In high school he was employed by Swofford Texaco, Stratmann Lumber and Alton Box. While attending college in Milwaukee he was employed by Heiser Ford and Aetna Insurance. After graduation he was employed by Louis Allis Company in Milwaukee, Basler Electric in Highland and McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. Following a 37 year career as an agent with State Farm Insurance Companies, he retired March 31, 2011. He earned many insurance and travel awards with State Farm. He and Grace lived in Milwaukee after their marriage before returning to Highland. In 1968 they moved to Maryland for a year while Jon was on assignment for McDonnell Douglas at Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center. He served as Highland Police and Fire Commissioner for 29 years, and was a founding member of the Southwestern Illinois Police Consortium. He held an Illinois Insurance Broker license as well as Series 7 & 63 Securities licenses. He was a former Highland Jaycee member, Highland Chamber of Commerce member, Boy Scout fundraiser, Kirchenfest volunteer and St. Paul Church member. He enjoyed playing tennis on a men’s league in his younger years. He was member of the Okaw Valley Radio Club as a short-wave amateur radio operator with call letters K9WDL, making radio connections with many countries by voice and Morse Code. At age 14 he earned his radio license after assembling a transceiver from a kit ordered by mail with money borrowed from his dad. A long-time season ticket holder, he loved Cardinal baseball. He had a life-long love of aviation, he took flying lessons and had the thrill of solo flights. In addition to his love of airplanes, he loved World War II history, Jimmy Stewart and old western movies, fine automobiles, college basketball, politics, following the Dow, hot weather and a cool drink. He and Grace enjoyed United States and European travel, cruises, trips to St. Lucia, Jamaica, Hawaii, West Indies and their favorite spots, Las Vegas and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Highland Area Community Foundation or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at the church or Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home who is serving the Sugg Family. In the spirit of service to others, the remains have been gifted to St. Louis University Medical School for Lewy Body Disease study. Julian E. Armbruster, age 79 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, November 30, 2014, at his residence in Highland, IL. He was born on Sunday, April 28, 1935, in Highland, IL, the son of Charles F. and Agnes (nee Bratcher) Armbruster. On Saturday, August 29, 1964, he married Irene G. Armbruster (nee Clarkin) who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL. Mr. Armbruster was born in Highland and grew up in Pierron, Illinois. The oldest of five children, he attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and St. Paul High School. He helped raise his brothers and sisters after his father died when he was 11. He attended SIU-C, then enlisted in the U.S. Army, stationed in Italy with the 34th Artillery Division. He attended nine years of night school while working full time at McDonnell-Douglas. He earned an AA and BA degree and most of his Masters. He worked at Missouri Research Laboratories and returned to McDonnell-Douglas. He purchased Warnecke Sheet Metal in 1970, a major heating and cooling contractor in Highland, still active in business today as Armbruster Heating. As a youth, he loved to rebuild wrecked cars. He enjoyed attending auctions, dancing, watching his son and grandson play music and perform with their bands, and watching classic movies. He loved to travel, visiting the Mediterranean, Italy, Spain, London, the Caribbean, and Alaska. Julian was also active in providing leadership and guidance to many young men in the Highland area. Marianna Rutz, age 90 of Highland, IL, died Monday, December 01, 2014, at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. She was born May 18, 1924, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Folbert and Katherine “Katie” (nee Saal) Beck. On August 07, 1950, she married Orville Jacob “Pete” Rutz who passed away on October 16, 2005. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. Marianna was born in Highland, IL. When she was younger she had lived in Long Island, NY and Germany. She moved back to Highland and married her husband. She was a beautician and owned and operated Marianna’s salon. She collected antiques and collectables. She loved her grandchildren, and great grandchildren, her pets, and loved animals. She always wanted to look nice and made sure her hair was done, nails polished and loved wearing her jewelry. Survivors include : Son In-law – Bruce A. Bellm, Highland, IL Grandchild – Katie B. Bernice Coyle, age 85 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, December 03, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born December 15, 1928, in East Saint Louis, IL, the daughter of Cleveland and Flossie (nee Frost) Tatum. On August 16, 1947, she married James J. Anton who passed away on November 19, 1977. She later Melvin L. Coyle in 1991 and he passed away September 21, 2009. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. She was also a volunteer for Saint Joseph Hospital Auxilliary. Bernice had many hobbies. She loved her pet birds, and loved to paint pictures. She traveled to Branson and Florida yearly, and enjoyed going to the Casino.
