William P. Noll, age 88 of Staunton, IL, died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at his residence in Staunton, IL. He was born on Thursday, June 10, 1926, in La Salle, IL, the son of William and Augusta (nee Kleefeld) Noll. On Friday, October 09, 1970, he married Audrey J. Noll (nee Everts). He was born and raised at La Salle, IL. Served with the US Navy, active duty during WWII, from May 1944 to March 1946. He lived most of his life at Staunton, IL and worked many years for Laclede Steel, Alton, IL, as a factory worker. He retired from Laclede Steel in 1988. Survivors include: Daughter – Angela M. Glenn A. Noeltner, age 80 of Saint Jacob, IL, died Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. He was born on Friday, June 01, 1934, in Highland, IL, the son of John P. and Viola E. (nee May) Noeltner. On Saturday, February 14, 1959, he married Jane P. Noeltner (nee Woll) who survives. He was a member of Saint Jacob United Church of Christ, St. Jacob, IL; Bussong-Mersinger – American Legion Post 665-St. Jacob, IL (Past Commander); Masonic Lodge #355, A.F. & A.M. (Masons)-Marine, IL. Mr. Noeltner was born at Highland, IL; grew up in Saint Jacob, IL and graduated from Saint Jacob High School in 1952. He earned a degree in Political Science from SIU-E in 1962. He started as a Field Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service and retired as a Special Agent for them in November 1990. He coached his son and grandchildren in Khoury League baseball and also coached with the American Legion team in Highland for may years. In his community, Glenn had been Chairman of the Homecoming Parade for a number of years and served on Zoning Board . He played Slow-pitch Softball for many years, enjoyed playing golf (shot a hole-in-one at Oak Brook) and was a Chicago Cubs Baseball fan. Melbern L. “Mel” Carrillon, age 86 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at his residence in Highland, IL. He was born on Tuesday, August 21, 1928, in Lebanon, IL, the son of Henry F. and Josephine L. (nee Voges) Carrillon. On Wednesday, December 14, 1949, he married Jane D. Carrillon (nee Luehm) who survives. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. He was also a member of Local 525 Teamsters; Local 600 Teamsters and a former member of Woodmen of the World Camp #105. Mr. Carrillon was born in Lebanon, IL, and moved to Highland at age nine. He worked at Highland Box Board, Highland Ready Mix, Bellm Freight, and The Anderson Motor Company in St. Louis. He retired at age 61 on 7/3/1989, driving millions of miles accident free. He repaired clocks in his retirement, collected antiques, and always had a nice yard. He enjoyed his dogs, walking and visiting with neighbors and his red and white 1984 Chevy Silverado. Shirley J. Coleman, age 89 of New Haven, CT, died Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Mary Wade Home in New Haven, CT. She was born in Mt. Vernon, IL on April 10, 1925, the daughter of Clarence and Edna (nee Neudecker) Bernard. She married William T. Coleman who passed away on January 25, 1995. Mrs. Coleman was born and reared in Mt. Vernon, IL. She and her husband lived in Decatur, IL from 1944-67. They had also lived in Springfield, IL ( approximately 10 years) and Wheaton, IL (for approximately 10 years); they moved to Florida in 1992. In 2005, Mrs. Coleman moved to Connecticut to be near her daughter. Of a strong faith, Mrs. Coleman was always active in the churches where she lived. The family would like to thank the staff of Mary Wade Home for their kindness, support and wonderful care she was given during her stay there. Survivors include : Daughter – Barbara C. He was born on Saturday, August 20, 1955, in Highland, IL, the son of Wibur Oliver and Rose Ann (nee Vosholler) Weder. On Saturday, October 03, 1987, he married Mary Ann Weder (nee Schroeter) who survives. He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Troy, IL; former member of the Knights of Columbus and a Laborer Local . Born at Highland, IL; grew up in St. Jacob, IL and attended Triad Schools. He lived at Fairbury, IL, later moved back to St. Jacob and was a welder for Spaeth Welding , New Baden, IL. He later became a laborer out of the St. Jacob labor hall for a number of years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing pool. He raised peacocks, pigeons, chickens, rabbits, ostrichs, emu and lambs. He loved to garden and butcher his own meat. Patricia A. Italiano, age 58 of Highland, IL, died Friday, September 19, 2014, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJC) in Saint Louis, MO. She was born on Wednesday, June 10, 1956, in Highland, IL, the daughter of William R. and Marion L. (nee Guentensberger) Reilson. On Saturday, April 02, 1977, she married Anthony J. “Tony” Italiano who survives. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL. Pat was born at Highland, IL; grew up on the family farm south of Marine, IL and graduated from Triad High School in 1974. She had worked for the Troy Security Bank after graduation; also the Internal Revenue Service in Saint Louis; and in civilian personnel at Scott Air Force Base. She and her husband moved to Chicago (1985-92) where she had worked for the Department of the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Station. When they returned to Highland she was a stay-at-home mom until 2001 when she re-entered the work force and worked for the US Army at Scott Air Force Base. Kay was an avid Baseball Cardinals Fan. She enjoyed travelling – including a windjammer cruise and sailing her own ship in the Caribbean.She enjoyed music and like to listen to her son play the guitar and keyboards. Donald Lester Merkle

Donald Lester Merkle, 69, of Alhambra, Illinois passed away on September 20, 2014 at St. Louis University Hospital. Don was born on April 24, 1945 in Highland, IL to Lester and Mabel (nee Iberg) Bohnenstiehl. He was adopted at age 2 by his uncle and aunt, Richard and Virginia (nee Bohnenstiehl) Merkle. Don graduated from Highland High School in 1963 and from the University of Illinois-Champaign in 1968 with a BS degree in animal sciences. Don married Donna Hosto on January 20, 1968, at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra. He was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army and served from 1968 until 1973, achieving the rank of Captain. During this time, he served one year in Vietnam as a reconnaissance pilot where he was awarded a Bronze Star. After the military, Don worked for Ralston Purina as a district sales manager. Don and Donna lived in Ft. Riley, KS; Monmouth, IL; and Quincy, IL before moving back to Alhambra, IL in 1980 to farm with his father-in-law. After his retirement, Don became a financial planner with Fortune Investment Group in Festus, MO. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Highland Lions Club, VFW Post 5694, Highland, IL, American Legion Post 1147, Alhambra, IL, and Madison County Farm Bureau where he served on the board of directors for nine years. Don’s greatest enjoyment in life came from spending time with family and friends, traveling, and playing games with his grandchildren. Don is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna and two daughters, Danna (Christophe) Valsecchi of Basking Ridge, NJ and Dione (Ray) Booth of Rochester, IL, and three grandchildren: Bianca Valsecchi, Danielle and Darren Booth. Other survivors include three siblings, Lila Manville of Highland, IL, Dale Merkle of Lebanon, MO, and Dennis Merkle of Highland, IL, and a sister-in-law, Gail (John) VanWinkle of Belleville, IL, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his parents, brother in-laws, Larry Hosto and Bill Manville, sister in-laws, Kathie Hosto Loyet, Cathy Merkle and Helga Merkle. Arrangements are being handled by Dauderman Mortuary in Alhambra, IL. Agnes Rose Kampwerth

Agnes Rose Kampwerth, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. She was born July 19, 1925, in St. Rose, IL, the daughter of William Anton and Wilhelmina (nee Tebbe) Benhoff. On May 08, 1946, she married Alfred B. Kampwerth who passed away on January 15, 2008. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. She was also a former member of St. Anne Altar Society. Mrs. Kampwerth was born and grew up on a farm east of St. Rose, IL. She worked at Moulton Bartley Shoe Factory in Highland for four years. After her marriage, she helped with the family farm northeast of Highland on Trestle Road. In 1982, she and her husband retired from farming and moved to Becker Road. After her retirement, she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 17 years in the Housekeeping Department. She was an extraordinary minister at St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel, volunteered at the hospital, and had been participating in perpetual adoration prayer at St. Joseph Hospital since 1993. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, playing cards (especially bid Euchre and Pinochle), and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was born on Saturday, March 15, 1952, in Highland, IL, the son of Orville B. and Clara M. (nee Tebbe) Liening. On Tuesday, April 24, 1990, he married Sherry Lee Weber Liening (nee Barth) who survives. He was a member of Saint Gertrude Catholic Church. He was also a member of Grantfork Volunteer Fire Dept. – Operating Engineers Local #100. Ron was born in Highland and grew up in Pocahontas, IL. He graduated Highland High School in 1971. He worked for E.F. Trucking, then worked for the City of Highland until 1990 in Maintenance. He then worked at American Steel. He also worked part-time for years as a farm hand for Eldon Grotefendt. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2006. He was always a hard worker and enjoyed hunting, camping, horseback riding and cutting firewood. Survivors include: Wife – Sherry L. Thomas A. Brown, Jr., age 88 of Pocahontas, IL, died Wednesday, October 01, 2014, at Faith Countryside Homes/Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born on Wednesday, September 15, 1926, in Pocahontas, IL, the son of Thomas A. and Isabella (nee Clark) Brown, Sr. He was also a member of Pocahontas Gordon Lodge #473, AF & AM; Ainad Temple (Shriners)-E. St. Louis; Bond County Shrine Club; American Legion #1227-Beckemeyer; VFW #5694- Highland. Mr. Brown was born in Pocahontas and grew up on a farm south of Pocahontas. He lived at Millersburg. He served with U.S. Navy during WWII. He was stationed in California and was a Seabee/operating engineer in the South Pacific. He served aboard the USN Tadcen and received the Victory Ribbon/WWII; American Area Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. He worked for Julius Kiraly as a radiator repairman and opened Tom’s Radiator Shop on 5th and Walnut in Highland for 15 years. He farmed in Bond County near Millersburg. He developed, owned and operated Tomahawk Campground (just south of Millersburg) and then sold it in the late 1980. He opened Tom’s Radiator Shop in Pierron from 1980 to 1992.He enjoyed playing horseshoes. In his early years, he enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and trap shooting. Survivors include: Son – Joseph T. He was born on Sunday, January 18, 1925, in Germantown, IL, the son of Fred H. and Mary R. (nee Schulte) Pollmann. On Wednesday, May 14, 1947, he married Esther A. Pollmann (nee Iberg) who passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL; the VFW Post #5694- Highland, IL (Past Commander-2 times). Born at Germantown, IL; grew up in Breese, IL; lived briefly in Marine, IL; moved to Highland, IL in 1950. He lived briefly with his children near Marine in 2004. He moved to the nursing home in 2005. He served with the US Army from July 1943 to December 1945, during World War II with duty in Europe (Normandy, North France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe). He worked for the Terminal Rail Road for a few years ; did odd jobs; drove a truck for Tracy Trucking; worked as a carpenter; he was a custodian for the Highland School District from 1960 to 1987; a school cross guard for the City of Highland in the early 1970’s; later drove a school bus for several years. He volunteered for the old Civil Defense Unit, Highland, IL. He liked fixing and building things (construction); maintaining and repairing cars. He was a jack of all trades. Commander Larry William Chassels, US Navy Retired, age 71 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, October 19, 2014, at Legacy Place in Highland, IL. He was born May 16, 1943, in Saint Louis, MO, the son of William F. and Edith (nee Overbeck) Chassels. He was a member of National Eagle Scout Association. CDR Chassels was born at St. Louis, MO; he grew up in Bellefontaine Neighbors, MO. While in high school, he and four close friends earned the Eagle Boy Scout award. He attended University of Missouri at Columbia receiving his BS in Mathematics. While in college he participated in US Navy ROTC. After graduating, he went to active duty with deployment to Vietnam. He served aboard the following ships: USS King, USS Sample, USS Fox, USS Samuel B. Roberts, and USS Ernest G. Small. He retired, as a Navy Commander, on July 1, 1991 with over 26 years of service. He lived at Cherry Hill, N.J. and worked at the Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia for Planning and Engineering for Repairs and Alterations for Cruisers and Destroyers (PERA-CRUDES) as security manager for computers and the shipyard. He retired after 30 years of work. In his retirement worked as security broker. He moved to Highland two years ago to be near his family. He had participated in church choirs in Cherry Hill, N.J and Hawaii. He enjoyed camping, scouting activities and target shooting. (He was a Sharpshooter in the Navy). Su-Hwei Chang, age 96 of Highland, IL, died Friday, October 24, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born on Saturday, March 16, 1918. She married Yu-Hen Chang who survives. Su-Hwei was born in China; educated in China at Kaifend Girls Teachers Academy College earing a college degree (unusual for a Chinese lady in 1940). She fled to Taiwan after WW II on December 27, 1948. She and her husband lived and reared their family in Taiwan for 30 years. They moved to the United States in 1978, and lived in New Baden and then Highland. In Taiwan, she taught Elementary School for 23 years. She was very busy with rearing her children. He was born August 25, 1932, in Highland, IL, the son of Lester Louis and Mathilda (nee Donnelly) Monken. On November 29, 1958, he married Rosemary M. Dickhaut who survives. He was a member of Teamsters Local 525-Highland, Trenton VFW Post #7983. Derl was born at Highland, and attended Highland Schools. He served with the US Army from 1952-1954. He worked in the oil fields is South Central IL, and later operated a tavern in Summerfield. In 1957 he started working at Highland Machine and Screw. He worked for almost 40 years, before retiring in 1996, as a painter. He enjoyed gardening, mowing grass, playing cards, word-find puzzles, and spending time with his grandchildren.
