Dorothy M. Grapperhaus, age 91 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, April 03, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born April 28, 1922, in Pocahontas, IL, the daughter of Erwin John and Ella Marie (nee Linenfelser) Wagner. On February 04, 1947, she married Frank B. Grapperhaus who passed away on February 02, 1995. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church-Highland, IL; Saint Anne Altar society of the church; Weinheimer Senior Citizens of Highland; former member of the Retail Clerk’s Union – Peoria, IL. Mrs. Grapperhaus was born on the family farm west of Pocahontas, IL; she grew up there attending Harned Country School and Pocahontas High School. She worked at the Egg Plant in Highland and then at Hug Truck Company in Highland. Following her marriage, she and her husband lived in Peoria, IL where he worked for the Caterpillar Company. (They had moved to Peoria in 1947). Mrs. Grapperhaus had worked at the Kroger Company for some 22 years until retiring to take care of her mother. After Mr. Grapperhaus’ retirement, they moved to Highland, IL on August 6, 1987. She moved to Highland Home seven years ago. Mrs. Grapperhaus enjoyed her nieces and nephews.She also enjoyed quilting and sewing cooking and housekeeping. Earlier in her life she liked bowling. Survivors include : Niece – Diane K. Anita L. Jakel, age 97 of Highland, IL, died Friday, April 04, 2014, at Deceased’s Residence in Highland, IL. She was born on Monday, February 26, 1917, Kansas, the daughter of Manuel and Olivia (nee Artime) Muniz. On Monday, September 03, 1956, she married Floyd C. Jakel who passed away on Saturday, May 22, 1999. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church and the St. Anne Altar Sodality-Highland. Anita was born in Kansas, the daughter of first generation Americans. She grew up in Terra Haute, IN and at age 13 moved to Spain. In 1950 her family moved to East St. Louis, IL and following her marriage she moved to Highland in 1956. She met her husband at Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis. They enjoyed dancing. She loved children and was a babysitter for the whole neighborhood. She enjoyed playing bingo. Always had a cat and loved them. Survivors include: Daughter – Mary Ann (Donald J.) Lois L. Steiner, age 79 of Pocahontas, IL, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at Carlyle Health Care Center in Carlyle, IL.
She was born on Saturday, October 20, 1934, in Marine, IL, the daughter of Carl L and Lorraine I (nee Thurnau) Gause, Sr..
On Sunday, November 20, 1955, she married Vernon L Steiner who survives .
She was a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ, Grantfork, IL, Women’s Guild of the church; Adam & Eve Club of the church; Madison County Home Extension; Past Member of the Chancel Choir & Ladies Choir of the church.
Born & reared at Marine, IL. She worked at the Marine Garment Factory; after marriage she and her husband lived on a farm East of Grantfork. After her children were reared she worked six years at Hitz Memorial Home, Alhambra. She was an excellent cook, liked to bowl, attended the local & state fairs and in her younger years she and her husband enjoyed dancing. She enjoyed playing cards with her siblings. She was a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Fan.

Alma L. Riepshoff, age 97 of Highland, IL, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at Alhambra Care Center in Alhambra, IL. She was born May 18, 1916, in Marine, IL, the daughter of Fred H. and Anna M. (nee Keck) Riepshoff. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. Alma was born and grew up on the family farm near Marine. At the age of 19 she moved to Highland. She was employed as a Nurse’s Aid at St. Joseph Hospital from 1956 to 1963, and from 1967 to 1986 when she retired at age 70. She moved to Faith Countryside Apartments after retireing. She moved to Alhambra Care Center 6 years ago. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling and going on tours. Survivors include : Nephew – Orville F. (Lois) Riepshoff Jr. , Highland, IL Nephew – Glenn E. William R. Zelke, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Highland Health Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born on Saturday, November 22, 1924, in Omro, WI, the son of Adolph and Evelyn (nee Roycraft) Zelke. On Thursday, December 26, 1946, he married Dorothy J. Zelke (nee Holtz) who passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014. He was a retired Teamster. Born at Omro, Rushford Township, Wisconsin. At age 18 he was drafted, he served with the US Army, active duty from 5/27/1943 to 2/25/1946, during WW II. He lived most of his life at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was an over the road truck driver and drove for Olson Trucking later known as CW (Central Wisconsin) Trucking, head quartered out of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; he retired after 40 years. In February 2013 he and his wife moved to Highland, Illinois and lived with their daughter for 10 months, later moved to the Highland Home in December 2013. He enjoyed boating, fishing, snowmobiling and traveling. He and his wife vacationed to Las Vegas and throughout the United States, visiting their daughter and grandchildren. Harry H. “Bud” Steinmann, age 79 of Hamel, IL, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Deceased’s Residence in Hamel, IL. He was born on Thursday, July 26, 1934, in Worden, IL, the son of Walter and Bertha (nee Reising) Steinmann. On Sunday, June 09, 1968, he married Judy A. Steinmann nee Schroeder who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Hamel, IL; a member of the Church Choir for 60 + Years; Church Trustee/Finance Committees. Harry was born and reared in Worden, IL. Harry joined the US Navy in 1955, with duties overseas aboard the USS Boxer. Harry worked for Suhre Gas Company and Cassen Transport as a truck driver. He worked for Steinmann trucking for many years as a truck driver, retiring in 2002; but he still worked part time until 2010 in the spring and summer helping his nephew. He enjoyed gardening, cutting grass, reading, and music. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include: Wife – Judy A. Donald Lee Clingenpeel, age 70 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at his residence in Highland, IL. He was born May 04, 1943, in Little Rock, AR, the son of Donald D. and Virginia Lee (nee Evans) Clingenpeel. On April 20, 2006, he married Irma A. Gassier who survives . He was a member of First Congregational Church. He was also a member of Highland Masonic Lodge #583 AF & AM. Donald was born in Little Rock, AR. He moved to California for a time and settled in Lawrence, KS. He sold shoes and played in a band to fund his education at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, then Kansas University, and served in the US Air Force. After serving, he lived and worked in Topeka, KS developing software for the State. Then worked at Lodge of Four Seasons at Lake of the Ozarks as Director of Information Technology. Following a stroke in 2001 he retired. He lived in Oklahoma, Bella Vista Arkansas, Monticello, Arkansas, and moved to Highland in 2009. Donald had a Green Thumb for gardening. He also always belonged to a church choir, where ever he lived, and volunteered at his church in Bella Vista and Monticello AR. Survivors include : Wife – Irma A. She was born July 19, 1953, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Lloyd Henry and Norma Geraline (nee Neumann) Marcoot. On March 30, 1985, she married Bradley Scott Rench who survives. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. She was also a member of Retired Teachers of Bond County, IL; Evangelical United Church of Christ Mission Board . Gay was born in Highland; grew up on the family farm at Pleasant Mound, IL. She graduated from Mulberry Grove High School in 1971. She received her BS and MS Ed from SIU-E. She started teaching at Mulberry Grove in the fall of 1975; taught for 33 years; retiring in 2009. She enjoyed time with friends, family, at church, shopping, exercising and traveling to Florida. Laurine Evelyn Thurnau, age 88 of Saint Jacob, IL, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at Faith Care Center-FCH in Highland, IL. She was born August 21, 1925, in Pierron, IL, the daughter of Melvin A. and Bertha M. (nee Rochelle) Knebel. On October 24, 1951, she married Harold Paul Thurnau who passed away on June 23, 2013. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She was also a member of St. Jacob Fireman’s Auxillary; Madison County Home Extension; St. James Altar Society; St. Jacob Home Coming Association. Laurine was born in rural Pierron. She was a 1943 graduate of Highland High School. After her marriage she and her husband moved to St. Jacob and she lived there until moving to Faith Care Center almost 6 years ago. She had worked as a Secretary for Attorney Don Rikke and as a Secretary for Obering Oil Company in St. Jacob. When she started her family she stayed home with her children. She sold Stanley Home Products and was Treasurer for the Village of St. Jacob for a number of years. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and family and was an avid Bingo player. She also enjoyed cooking, collecting cookbooks, walking, and helping with St. Jacob Strawberry Festival ( from its beginning), worked on St. Jacob History Book, being part of Community activities in the Village of St. Jacob, picking, eating and cooking strawberries. She enjoyed time with neighbors and babysitting her grandchildren. Laurine took care of her daughter Jane who was blind and on dialysis for over 10 years. Survivors include : Daughter – Mary A. Gerald Dean “Jerry” Wenzel, age 86 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at his residence in Highland, IL. He was born July 02, 1927, in Brunswick, MO, the son of Percy George and Clara Rose (nee Elson) Wenzel. On February 20, 1994, he married Maria Luise “Marlies” Wind who survives in Highland, IL. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. He was also a member of City Treasurer of Highland (12 years); Optimist Club (President in 1967)-Highland; Ainad Temple, A.A.O.N.O.M.S (Shriners)-East St. Louis, IL; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Southern Illinois-Belleville; MaCliBo Circus Unit-Past President; Silver Lake Shrine Club-Highland; Masonic Lodge #583, A.F. & A.M.-Highland; Helvetia Sharpshooters Society-Highland; Highland Historical Society; VFW Post #5694-Highland; Lee Iten Post 439-American Legion-Highland; Highland Sportsman’s Club.. He lived in St. Louis, MO and Collinsville, IL, and worked for Boatmen’s National Bank in St. Louis from 1948-1950. In 1950, he moved to Highland and a year later was called back to the Navy, serving one year on the USS Arcadia during the Korean War. He worked for The First National Bank in Highland and retired after 40 years of service in 1990 as an Executive VP and Senior Loan Officer. During his banking career, he had attended Washington University and the American Institute of Banking. He loved to travel and visited all 50 states and Europe, Mexico, Canada, and Australia. He enjoyed camping, co-owning the Indian Grove Campground in Coffeen, IL and he and his wife would winter in Arizona and Texas. He led a very active life, coaching Khoury League baseball and Weinheimer basketball for years, bowled, card playing with friends, and was an award winning ballroom and squaredancer. He was also a collector of antique cars, clocks, and Ford memorabilia. Most importantly, he loved his family and always kept them number one in his life. Michael T. Kulig, age 82 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Aviston Countryside Manor in Aviston, IL. He was born on Tuesday, September 29, 1931, in Chicago, IL, the son of Michael F. and Sophie (nee Glowa) Kulig. On Saturday, August 25, 1956, he married Joan C. Kulig (nee McLinden) who survives . Born and Raised in Chicago, IL; served with the US Air Force on active duty from 11/08/51 until 06/19/53 during the Korean War, stationed with the Far East Logistical Force near Tokyo. He graduated from Lewis College in Lockport, IL in 1958, where he went into teaching at Richland Grade School in Crest Hill, IL. He coached all boys sports, and later became the District Superintendent. In 1978 he moved to become Superintendent of the Akeley MN, School District, where he also coached High School Varsity Football, until his retirement in 1989. He received numerous honors for his work in Education, and community service. Born and reared in Council Bluffs, Iowa; graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School; later graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, with a BS in engineering. He worked for Motorola, Chicago, IL and Phoenix, AZ, there he designed a communication relay for the Lunar Rover (from rover to shuttle). He then worked for Resdel Engineering, California; Stewart-Warner, Chicago, IL; Basler Electric, Highland, IL, in 1976 for 18 years; Scott Air Force Base in 1994 for 5 years, then he retired. He loved reading about the Civil War, World War II and history. He enjoyed time with his extended family. Eli liked to be out in nature. She was also co-owner, with her husband, of Pfeiffer Pickup Covers and served as Secretary and Treasure of their company from 1986-2000. Glenn C. “Dick” Willmann, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Faith Countryside Homes/Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born on Thursday, August 21, 1924, in Highland, IL, the son of Urban H. and Dena H. (nee Strotheide) Willmann. On Saturday, March 05, 1949, he married Evelyn M. Willmann (nee Gelly) who survives. He was a member of Carpenter’s Local #1535 (Past President); Highland Masonic Lodge #583 AF & AM (since 1952); former Highland City Council Member; Highland Country Club (Past President). Mr. Willmann was born in Highland, the youngest of six children. He left high school early to help support his family and joined the Navy in 1943. He was a veteran of WWII, having served on the U.S.S. Honolulu. He received the Navy Unit Commendation from the Navy Department for “outstanding heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces during the Battle of Kula Gulf and Kolombangaro and operations at Palau and Leyte.” He was discharged with six battle stars in 1946. In the late 1940′s, he ran Dick’s Sandwich Shop, which was located on the Highland Square. He also served as a Highland police officer at one time and served with the Highland City Council when Highland’s Silver Lake was proposed and constructed. He was a carpenter by trade and was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1535 for over 60 years. After retirement, Dick enjoyed golf and collecting model trains, golf memorabilia, and going to auctions. He and his wife also attended and/or hosted many U.S.S. Born in Highland, IL; reared in St. Jacob, IL and graduated from Triad High School, Troy, IL, in 1968. After marriage he and his wife lived at Cicero, IL. He trained horses at Arlington, Sportsmens & Hawthorne Race Tracks. He worked at Pecter Hardware Store, Cicero, IL; and as a general handyman. In 2004 they moved to Pierron, IL to be closer to his family and make a better life for their children. He loved horses, attending auctions and being with family. Survivors include: Wife – Dawn A. Juanita B. Bauchens, age 90 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born on Sunday, September 09, 1923, in Idaho Falls, ID, the daughter of Lafe and Lillian (nee Anderson) Baker. On Saturday, May 31, 1941, she married Robert S. Bauchens who passed away on Thursday, September 02, 2010. She was a member of VFW Post #1117 Ladies Auxiliary, Caseyville, IL; PTA of Bluffview Park School, Caseyville, IL. Born and reared in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She worked at a potato plant (making dehydrated potatoes for the U.S. troops) later working for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, St. Louis, MO. She lived in E. St. Louis, IL; in 1947 moved to Caseyville, IL and in 1968 moved to Highland, IL. She was a great seamstress making doll clothes for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Blanche Lucy Jantzen, , age 89 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, February 02, 2014, at Bloomington Garden Villa in Bloomington, IN. She was born on Monday, December 01, 1924, in Bartelso, IL, the daughter of Louis David and Rose Eugenia (nee Poirot) Jantzen. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church-Highland, IL; St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. Blanche departed this world to join our Lord and Savior on Sunday Morning, February 2nd. As an historian, a librarian, a progressive democrat, an energetic volunteer, a dear friend and a steadfast pen and paper correspondent Blanche led an active and interesting life and worked and lived in cities across the United States including Bartelso, Chicago, Springfield and Highland, Illinois; Phoenix, Arizona; San Francisco, California; Notre Dame and Bloomington, Indiana and Greensboro, North Carolina. Blanche was beloved Aunt to a great many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews and is preceded in death by all but one of her four siblings. Blanche’s one remaining sister, Rosemary, says she rejoices with Blanche in the beginning- appropriately on Sunday Morning- of a new life without pain, suffering or unhappiness. Blanche had a special devotion to St. Francis of Assisi and will be missed by all who knew her.
