Edna M. Mollet, age 90 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Faith Countryside Homes/Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. She was born on Monday, August 13, 1923, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Edgar N. and Sophia H. (nee Ims) Gilomen. On Tuesday, December 04, 1945, she married Gerald E. Mollet who passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2000. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL, honorary member of the Women’s Guild of the church (she was secretary for over 10 years); NFO. Born on Deck’s Prairie, Northwest of Highland; she grew up there. She attended Giger Country School and lived on her family’s home farm all of her life. She graduated from Highland High School in 1941. Mrs. Mollet worked at Danche’s Egg Factory for 3 years and then at Highland Machine and Screw for 1 1/2 years. She married Gerald E. Mollet on December 4, 1945. She and her husband operated a grain and livestock family farm. Mrs. Mollet enjoyed quilting, cooking, and she raised her four sons by living off the farm (gardening and canning). She also taught Bible School at her church and enjoyed helping the Women’s Guild with tours and funeral lunches for many years.. Survivors include: Son – Wayne A. (Trudy A.) Stanley C. Gum, age 78 of Belleville, IL, formerly of Highland, IL, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Natan Health Care Center in East Saint Louis, IL. He was born on Sunday, March 01, 1936, in Tamalco, IL, the son of Melvin C. and Grace (nee Mills) Gum. On Thursday, June 07, 1962, he married Gladys L. Gum (nee Pultz Lambert) who passed away on Monday, April 15, 1996. He was a former member of the Highland Sportsmen’s Club, Highland, IL. Born and reared at Tamalco, IL. He lived in Keysport, Greenville and moved to Highland, IL in the mid 1970′s. Stanley through the years drove a oil truck, farmed and drove a milk truck. He worked for Hussmann Refrigeration; later for Smith and Nephew; and later for Ingersoll-Rand Co. all in St. Louis, MO. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Donald James Mersinger, age 88 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at his residence. He was born October 02, 1925, in Saint Jacob, IL, the son of Leo Valentine and Sophie Teresa (nee Nagel) Mersinger. On November 25, 1950, he married Ruth Estelle Koch who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Holy Name Society (Past President); Rural Mail Carriers Local. Donald was born at St. Jacob and moved to Highland at age 2 1/2 years old. He has lived on the home place every since. He attended Saint Paul School. He helped with family farm, assumed operation of farm (livestock and grain) after his father’s death. He retired from farming in 1977. He started in 1968 as a sub mail carrier and went full time in 1977 in the Highland Post Office. He retired in 1988. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling (3 times a week), takening care of his garden, puzzles, picking walnuts and playing cards (Poker and Jass). Enjoyed traveling to Florida, Hawaii, and Italy . Jon David Schneider, age 75 of Highland, IL, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. He was born September 03, 1938, in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Austin Edward and Lucille Adele (nee Carlson) Schneider. On May 25, 1960, he married Grace Elizabeth Bergendoff who passed away February 19, 2008. He was a member of Highland Southern Baptist Church. He was also a former member of Grace Church at Creve Coeur, MO; former member of Toastmasters International. Jon was born in Indianapolis, IN. He grew up in Wheaton, IL and graduated Wheaton Community High School. He had lived at Glen Ellen, Lombard, Sycamore and Mascoutah, IL. He moved to Highland in 1978.After High School he served with the US Army from 1958 -1959 with duty in Germany and Italy. He was trained as a helicopter mechanic and became a Crew Chief. His professional career after the Army, started with Continental Telephone, later GTE, as a Lineman. He retired for GTE in 2000 as Executive Director of Finance. He had a farm near Mulberry Grove, and enjoyed keeping his machinery working. He loved his family and was a very generous person. Lorraine G. Jakel, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Faith Care Center, Highland, IL. She was born on Saturday, February 07, 1925, in Pierron, IL, the daughter of Anton G. and Wilhelmina A. (nee Goestenkors) Korte. On Tuesday, March 05, 1946, she married Harvey R. Jakel who passed away on Wednesday, July 01, 2009. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL, Perpetual Adoration at St. Joseph; St. Joseph Ladies Auxiliary; former member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church; St. Gertrude Altar Society. Lorraine was born near Pierron, IL and graduated Immaculate Conception Grade School. Later she and her husband operated a Dairy Farm east of Grantfork, IL, until 1985. She moved to Highland in 2004. She had been a resident of Faith Countryside Homes, Highland Home, Legacy Place and in the Winter of 2012 moved to Faith Care Center. As a young lady, she had worked at Moulton Bartley Shoe Factory and Wick’s Aircraft. And, of course, worked on the family farm and raised her children. She enjoyed playing Euchre, sewing, baking, crocheting, and word search puzzles. She really enjoyed going out to eat and attending events for her children and grandchildren. Born at Pontiac, Michigan; raised at Waterford, Michigan and lived there after marriage. She worked in the tool crib at the General Motors Plant, Detroit, Michigan, for 13 years. She and her husband later moved to St. Louis, MO, later to Pierron, IL, then Florida for a few years, back to Pierron, IL and later to Highland, IL. She enjoyed cooking, reading the bible, writing and her cat “Crickett”. She truly loved spending time with her grandchildren. Burnell E. Maedge

Burnell E. Maedge, age 97 of Marine, IL, died Thursday, June 05, 2014, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. He was born on Monday, January 29, 1917, in Highland, IL, the son of Henry and Mathilda “Tillie” (nee Ims) Maedge. On Sunday, November 27, 1949, he married Linette K. Maedge nee Kolm who survives. Burnell was born at Highland, grew up on a farm between Highland & Marine. He farmed with his father until 1948, at which time he began working at Marine Grain Elevator. He spent thirty-five (35) years as manager of the elevator under the ownerships of Valier-Spies Milling Company, Alhambra Grain and Feed, Illinois Grain Corporation, and Madison Service Company. He retired in 1982. Burnell was a life-long active member of the Marine United Church of Christ having served on the Church Council for many years and as a member of the Men’s Fellowship. He served also as a member of the Hitz Home Board of Directors. Burnell was an honorary past Master of Marine Masonic Lodge #355, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Southern Illinois and Ainad Temple ( Shriner’s) of East St. Louis. He was a Shriner of the Year of the Silver Lake Shrine Club in 1990. He joined the Marine Volunteer Fire Department in 1950 and serviced the department for 26 years (as president for four years). Burnell was a member of the Marine Cemetery Board for 33 years. As a youth he played baseball with the Decks Prairie ball club, the Marine Club and the Highland Merchants, and softball with the Marine UCC Ball Club. Burnell enjoyed attending and watching Cardinal baseball games. Upon retirement, he enjoyed traveling and collecting/restoring antiques. His work can be found in other states as far away as California and Washington, as well as in articles in the magazine “Country Living”. His collections include primitive tools, marbles, Marine history, coins, and others. In recent years, he and Linette were called upon often to tell the story of Marine and its past; Burnell’s account of flour making in Marine covers more than 100 years of that industry. She was also a member of Ladies Auxiliary to the Highland-Pierron Fire Department; International Women’s Club. Born and reared in Cologne, Germany. She received the Citizens Purple Heart during WWII. She came to the states in January of 1952, with no knowledge of English; later naturalized in 1956. She helped her husband operate their dairy farm. She was very influential in their children’s education, making sure they all received a college education. She loved to travel: Germany, Europe, US tours, Hawaii and taking cruises. She enjoyed competing and medaled in breast stroke swimming in the Senior Olympics. She was a breast cancer survivor. For some 5 years she worked at Michael’s Restaurant as a waitress. She was born January 02, 1919, in Hillsboro, IL, the daughter of William Jerome and Irene Temple (nee Sammons) McNatt. On March 26, 1945, she married Fredrick Charles Higginbotham who preceeded her in death on April 27, 1977. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was born in Hillsboro, IL and a graduate of Odessa High School in 1937. She started her working career as a true “Rosie the Riveter” in Kansas City, KS at a munitions factory during World War II. She later worked, for most of her career at Basler Electric in Highland, IL. She and her husband lived in Pocahontas from 1946 to 1993, when she moved to St. Charles, IL, and later to Southbury, CT, to be near her daughter. Helen loved to be surrounded by her family and friends. She was always ready for a hug and took comfort in Bible Study and her Faith. Born at the family home and reared in Troy, IL. Graduated from McCray-Dewey High School, Troy, IL, in 1951. He served with the US Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. He worked at the Commonwealth-Edison and Shell Oil Refinery, as a Insulator; later he worked out of Local #1, St. Louis, MO. He retired in 1994. He coached his sons in baseball. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. He was also a member of Member of Church Brotherhood; Weinheimer Senior Citizens; IMRF Chapter 31. Roy was born and reared at Highland, IL. He worked at Hug Trucking Company, Basler Electric, Polar Ice and Fuel for 25 years, City of Highland for 15 years, Ken’s Greenhouse, and retired from the city of Highland in 1987. In his earlier years, he helped make hay and shuck corn for area farmers. He also mowed lawn for several people. In 1950, he built his home on Deal Street, where he lived with his wife all of their married life. He was a former Boy Scout leader. Loved to fix things, dance, travel, and spend time with his family; especially his sons and grandson, and adored his wife of 64 years. He enjoyed playing checkers, horseshoes, dominoes, and fishing. Elda L. Schmidt, age 92 of Alhambra, IL, died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL. She was born on Saturday, December 10, 1921, in Alhambra, IL, the daughter of John and Katherine (nee Henschen) Braundmeyer. On Sunday, March 03, 1946, she married Herbert H Schmidt who survives. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Alhambra, IL; Salem UCC Women’s Guild; Leef Township Senior Citizens. Mrs. Schmidt was born and reared on the family farm north of Alhambra, IL. She lived there her entire life on the family farm. She reared her family and cared for her parents until their death. Mrs. Schmidt worked part-time at the Hitz Memorial Home in the Laundry Department for 15 years. Elda enjoyed crocheting, piecing and quilting. Survivors include: Husband – Herbert H.
