Laura Marie Kapp, age 92 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, March 02, 2014, at Relais Bonne Eau in Edwardsville, IL. She was born September 08, 1921, in Aviston, IL, the daughter of Joseph Frank and Bertha Johanna (nee Poettker) Litteken. On November 05, 1946, she married Edgar Ben Kapp who passed away on April 16, 2009. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of Helvetia Sharpshooters Society, KC Ladies, VFW and American Legion Auxillary. . Laura and her husband farmed Northeast of Highland, raising livestock and grain. Wayne Russell Hobbs, Sr., age 74 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, March 09, 2014, at his residence in Highland, IL. He was born November 16, 1939, in Trenton, IL, the son of William and Marie (nee Haas) Hobbs. On December 17, 1966, he married Norma J Vosholler who survives. He was a member of United Auto Workers-Hazelwood, Missouri. Wayne was born and reared in Trenton, IL. He attended the Trenton Schools and then enlisted in the US Marine Corp. He served From 7/1/59-4/12/63 with duty in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge, he started to work for Ford Motor Company. After 30 years and 3 months of service he retired from Ford in 1993. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, they had cruised the Caribbean a number of times and had been to Hawaii. Wayne followed the baseball Cardinals and Cubs – especially the Cubs. He liked to plant a large garden every year. Time with his grandsons was very important. Anything John Wayne was special. Survivors include : Wife – Norma J. Marcelina Anna Johanna Thacker Huber, age 84 of Highland, IL, died Monday, March 03, 2014, at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, MO.
She was born April 15, 1929, in Breese, IL, the daughter of John and Anna (nee Lunitz) Baumgartner.
She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church.
Marceline was born at Breese. She grew up there and in Greenville. She worked at Demoulins in Greenville, and as a nurses assistant at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis. She became an interior decorator for many years. After a back injury she became a housekeeper. She moved to Highland in 1979, and moved to Faith Countryside Homes Apartments in the early 2000′s. She played tennis when she was younger, and enjoyed sewing, puzzles, hiking, and visiting parks.

Robert L. Zobrist, age 88 of Highland, IL, died Saturday, March 08, 2014, at Deceased’s Residence in Highland, IL.
He was born on Tuesday, February 09, 1926, in Greenville, IL, the son of Clarence and Goldie (nee Hill) Zobrist.
On Saturday, June 03, 1967, he married Verna Mae Zobrist (nee Von Alst) who passed away on Saturday, November 02, 2013.
He was a member of Central Christian Church, Greenville, IL.
Robert L. “Sewing Machine Man” Zobrist, was born and reared in rural Greenville, IL. Served with the US Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946; active duty during WWII. After his military service he worked for De Moulin Brothers, Greenville, IL; later began repairing commercial sewing machines, working for the Marine Garment Co, Marine and Highland, IL, working there until 1986. He then worked for Miss Elaine Garment Co., O’Fallon, IL until 1988. He was known in several counties for working on sewing machines. He worked on sewing machines from his house for over 50 years. He volunteer for Meals On Wheels, the Highland Food Pantry and drove people to hospitals and doctor appointments. He truly loved riding motorcycles; he and his wife travelled all over the United States.

Lorna V. Reinacher, age 84 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, March 06, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL.
She was born March 18, 1929, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Edward Charles and Elvira (nee Dresch) Zobrist.
On August 16, 1947, she married Elmer Clarence Reinacher who passed away on February 27, 2001.
She was a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ. She was also a member of Search Committee for the Church; Highland Women’s Club (past president); UFO (United For Others).
Born Southeast of Highland, IL; reared there on the family farm. She worked at many local places: Wicks Organ Co.; Basler Electric; Zobrist Bus Line, driving Highland High School students to Collinsville Vocational School. She helped her husband for many years with the family farm. She moved into Highland January of 2001. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, quilting, playing cards with family and friends, making pies for the Fire Department, Grantfork Homecomings and the church sausage suppers.

Gladys Grotefendt, age 90 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, March 05, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born November 15, 1923, in Edwardsville, IL, the daughter of John E. and Emma Minnie (nee Wiehe) Speckmann. On June 14, 1945, she married Earl Edward Grotefendt who survives. She was a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ. She was also a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ Women’s Guild, Leef Township Senior Citizens (Founder); Madison County Farm Bureau Seniors (Prime Timers). Mrs. Grotefendt was born on a farm near Hamel. She was a graduate of Columbia Grade School (6/12/1937) and Edwardsville High School (6/10/1941). She worked for Madison Service, Marine Garment, and Granite City Army Depot. In 1956, she and her husband moved to Grantfork, and they started farming in Marine. In 1976, she and her husband established “Golden Grain Farms” west of Grantfork, along with her daughter and son-in-law. She and her husband enjoyed traveling all over the world. Maurice E. Hartlieb, age 77 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, February 16, 2014, at Faith Countryside Homes/Faith Care Center in Highland, IL.
He was born on Sunday, September 06, 1936, in Highland, IL, the son of Orville Henry and Louise Catherine (nee Kapp) Hartlieb.
On Thursday, November 26, 1959, he married Irma M. Hartlieb (nee Woltering) who survives.
He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL; Teamster with Illinois Department of Transportation; Farm Heritage Museum, Greenville, IL.
Reared on a farm in the Jamestown area. He graduated from Breese High School and entered the US Navy after high school and served aboard the USS Bradford 545 in the Pacific. He worked 12 years for Highland Machine; farmed with his father; later he and his wife ran small farms at Grantfork, Carlyle and Highland. In 1972 he began working for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, from the IDOT-Bond County Facility (Greenville shed) and retired after 23 years. The last farm he and his wife owned and operated for 40 years was on Trestle Road. He restored International tractors; enjoyed fishing, hunting and his pride and joy Yellow Labrador Retriever “Daisey”. He liked to play Pinochle & Euchre. Mr. and Mrs. Hartlieb enjoyed over 54 years of marriage.

Melvin R. Reinacher, age 88 of Marine , IL, died Sunday, February 09, 2014, at Highland Health Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born on Saturday, November 14, 1925, in Highland, IL, the son of Albert Louis and Emma Louise (nee Sudhoff) Reinacher. On Saturday, April 14, 1945, he married Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Reinacher (nee Plocher) who passed away on Sunday, August 08, 2004. He was a member of United Church of Christ of Marine, Marine, IL, Bond County Antique Machinery Club; Madison County Farm Bureau. Born and reared in Highland, IL; at age 13 moved to a farm southwest of Highland and attended Oak Grove Country School, then went to Highland High School. He farmed south of Highland; later southeast of Highland and in 1951 moved to a farm east of Marine. He operated a grain and livestock farm all his life. He had worked at the old Hagnauer-Koebel Dealership for a number of years and later for the State of Illinois for over 24 years, retiring in the early 1990′s. He enjoyed wood working, collecting antique machinery, John Deere tractors, restored antique gas engines and liked to garden. Survivors include: Daughter – Kay A. At age 3 she and her family moved to New Douglas, IL, where she attended grade school. She graduated Highland High School in 1963. She married her high school sweetheart in 1964. She was employed by Journal Printing since 1976 as a bookkeeper. She was very active in all her children’s activities, and very active in the community and her church. She volunteered for many church activities and also at the Highland Food Pantry. William J. Starkweather, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Monday, February 03, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. He was born on Thursday, October 09, 1924, in Broken Arrow, OK, the son of John W. and Mildred K. (nee Castel) Starkweather. On Saturday, November 03, 1951, he married Margaret L. Starkweather (nee Claxton) who passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Alhambra, IL; VFW Post 5694-Highland (former Chaplain for 20 years); Lee Iten Post 439-American Legion-Highland; Disabled American Veterans (lifetime member); President of Harris Cemetery Board at Alhambra; Past President and delegate for Veterans Assistance Commission at Edwardsville, Ill.. Mr. Starkweather was born at Broken Arrow, OK., he moved to IL at age 2. He was a 1942 graduate of Hettick High School, Hettick, IL. He worked at Owens Illinois Glass for seven months then went into the Army with duty in Northern France. On 1/30/45 he was wounded and discharged 3/20/46 as a Sgt., he recieved a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He lived in Maryland for a year, New Jersey for 3 1/2 years, and returned to IL in 1950. He then moved to Columbia, MO to work for Foremost Farms Dairy for 2 1/2 years, then School of the Ozarks as herdsman for 2 1/2 years, he then went back to Foremost Farms for 2 years. In 1958 he returned to Owens Illinois Glass and on 9/1/58 he became a Dairy herdsman at Alton State Hospital for 5 years; from 1963-1965 he worked in WI as herdsman; from 1967-1972 he managed a Dairy Farm in Greenville; from 1972-1974 he worked in Alabama as herdsman; in 1974 he went to Nanitou Farm at Alhambra for 2 1/2 years and Granada Farms; in 1976 he went to Highland and worked at the Highland Post Office for 11 years; in 1990 he worked for Clean Uniform where he retired in 2000. He traveled with his wife on Senior Citizen tours. He moved into Faith Countryside Homes in late 2007. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball team; following Tiger Woods; activities at FCH; his family and faith was very important to him. Survivors include: Daughter – Glenna J. She was born on Sunday, September 04, 1921, in Highland, IL, the daughter of John E. and Edna (nee Clayton) Schmitt.
On Saturday, October 26, 1940, she married Eldon J. Mayer.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marine, IL; St. Elizabeth Altar Society and Helvetia Sharpshooters Society.
Germain was born at Highland and grew up East of St. Jacob on a farm. After her marriage she and her husband moved onto the Mayer Farm. They farmed and raised beef and dairy cattle. She lived there the rest of her life. The couple retired from farming in 1985. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, dancing, embroidery, sewing, baking, and travelling. She and her husband went to Lindendale Park every Saturday night to dance.

Dolores was born at St. Louis, MO. She moved to Marine and she and her husband lived at the corner of Marine and Fruit Road; where she reared her children. She worked for SIUE in the Grants and Research Project Department. She and her husband moved to Plano, TX in the fall of 1978. She worked for University of Texas at Dallas in the Grants and Research Project Department; she retired in 1989. She enjoyed bowling, crafts, doing yard work, reading, taking long walks and bowling tournaments. She liked watching the Texas Rangers and she kept score at her son’s games. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dorothy June “Dot” Zelke, age 86 of Highland, IL, died Monday, March 31, 2014, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born on Wednesday, June 8, 1927, in Oshkosh, WI, the daughter of Raymond A. and Agnes Julia (nee Griedel) Holtz. On Thursday, December 26, 1946, she married William Raymond “Bill” Zelke who survives. Mrs. Zelke was born and reared in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She worked as a waitress for 30 years; working at the Pioneer Restaurant, the Bungalow Restaurant, and others in the area. In February of 2013, she and her husband moved to Highland and lived with their daughter for 10 months. They moved to Highland Home in December of the same year. She enjoyed her bowling leagues, playing cards, snowmobiling, boating, and traveling. They vacationed to Las Vegas and throughout the United States, visiting their daughter and grandchildren. Genevieve Helen Koelz, age 93 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, April 02, 2014, at Faith Care Center in Highland, IL. She was born May 22, 1920, in Grantfork, IL, the daughter of John and Edna (nee Raeber) Frey. On April 27, 1940, she married Calvin Edgar “Cally” Koelz who passed away October 25, 2006. She was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church. She was also a member of St. Gertrude Altar Sodality; Leef Township Senior Citizens. Mrs. Koelz was born in Grantfork, Illinois and attended Purcell County School. She was a 1938 graduate of St. Paul High School and briefly worked at Moulton Bartley Shoe Factory. After her marriage, she stayed at home and helped her husband on the family farm. After his death, she moved to Highland. She enjoyed playing pinochle, gardening, embroidery, and birdwatching.
