Joseph Marshall Fernandez, age 88 of Alhambra, IL, died Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Alhambra Care Center in Alhambra, IL.
He was born on Tuesday, April 28, 1925, in Cherryvale, KS, the son of Vidal and Mary (nee Yglesias) Fernandez, Sr.
Joseph was born in Cherryvale, KS; lived in St. Louis; Beckemeyer, IL; East Saint Louis, IL. He attended East Saint Louis Senior High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy on July 29, 1943, with duties aboard the USS Giansar in the South Pacific. He worked 51 years in the Livestock sales business at National Stockyards in East St. Louis. He moved to Pierron, after retirement; then to the nursing home 12 years ago.

Marie H. Luber, age 94 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, March 02, 2014, at Faith Countryside Homes/Faith Care Center in Highland, IL.
She was born on Monday, April 07, 1919, in St. Rose, IL, the daughter of August “Gus” and Anna (nee Haselhorst) Wessel.
On Thursday, November 25, 1943, she married Herbert A. Luber who passed away on Monday, May 21, 2012.
She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL; former member of the Daughters of Isabella – Sacred Heart Circle #237, Highland, IL.
Born at St. Rose, Illinois; attended St. Rose School. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland, IL, as a nurse’s aide. Following her marriage she stayed home and reared her boys. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, baking pies and cakes and was very faithful to her church. She and her husband lived in Pierron, IL until 35 years ago when they moved to Highland.

She was born September 08, 1921, in Aviston, IL, the daughter of Joseph Frank and Bertha Johanna (nee Poettker) Litteken. On November 05, 1946, she married Edgar Ben Kapp who passed away on April 16, 2009. She was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of Helvetia Sharpshooters Society, KC Ladies, VFW and American Legion Auxillary. . Laura and her husband farmed Northeast of Highland, raising livestock and grain. Madelyn C. Grotefendt, age 79 of Marine, IL, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville, IL.
She was born on Saturday, March 10, 1934, in Michael, IL, the daughter of Otto and Agnes (nee Sebacher) Gotway.
On Saturday, October 25, 1958, she married Delmar D. Grotefendt who passed away December 26, 2007.
She was a member of Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marine, Illinois.
Madelyn was born in Michael, Illinois and spent her younger years in St. Louis, MO. She graduated from Murphsyboro High School, Murphysboro, IL, in 1952 and then worked as a secretary at SIU-C. She met her husband on a blind date and they later married and moved to Marine, IL. She helped her husband operate the farm and reared her family. She knitted afghans and sweaters and loved to read and do jigsaw puzzles.

Lenore L. Frey, age 92 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Gardens of Statesville in Statesville, NC. She was born February 25, 1922, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Milton Fred and Linda Mary (nee Hug) Matter. On November 25, 1941, she married Ralph George Frey who passed away on November 18, 2004. She was also a member of Lee Iten American Legion Post 549 Auxillary. Mrs. Frey grew up on the Matter farm Northwest of Highland. She graduated from Highland High School in 1940. She raised her unique family and was a fun-loving lady.She was a member of the Out House Trio and took many trips to New Glarus to play for over 35 years. She wintered in Florida and she enjoyed cooking. She enjoyed travel and had visited every State, along with South America, Europe and Asia. Gathering with friends brought her great joy.
