Eugene “Popeye” Kovach

Eugene “Popeye” Kovach, age 86 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, November 04, 2014, in Highland, IL. He was born on Sunday, September 30, 1928, in Pocahontas, IL, the son of Louis and Lena (nee Toth) Kovach. On Saturday, June 16, 1956, he married Mary Lee Kovach (nee Long) who survives. He was also a member of IBEW Local 309-Collinsville, IL (52 plus years member); VFW Post 5694-Highland, IL. He was born at Pocahontas, IL, grew up there and graduated from Pocahontas High School. He served with the US Army from Sept. 1946 to Jan. 1948; active duty during WWII in Japan. He operated a Texaco Gas Station in Pocahontas; attended Electricians School and later worked many years as a electrician for Egizii Electric, Springfield, IL. He worked from 1972 to 1990 for Kovach Electric, Pocahontas, IL; then operated LJL Equipment Company from 1991 to the early 2000. He and his wife moved from Pocahontas to Highland, IL, in 1966. He enjoyed fishing in the area lakes and ponds. He and his wife were avid snow mobile riders until 2008. They had a home in Northern Wisconsin where they spent time in the summer and winter. Survivors include: Wife – Mary Lee Kovach (nee Long), Highland, IL Daughter – Laura A. (Harry Wilkes) Kovach, Huntington Beach, CA Daughter – Jan M. (Dennis) Trobaugh, Highland, IL Daughter – Lynn F. Kovach-Kohlbrecher, Highland, IL Grandchild – Michael A. Trobaugh, Highland, IL Grandchild – Sarah M. Trobaugh, Highland, IL Grandchild – Harley L. Kohlbrecher, Highland, IL Brother – Louis (Faye) Kovach, Pocahontas, IL Sister In-law – Edna Long, Pocahontas, IL Sister In-law – Margaret (Harry) Zediker, Collinsville, IL Sister In-law – Bernice Kovach, Pocahontas, IL He was preceded in death by: Father – Louis Kovach Mother – Lena Kovach (nee Toth) Brother – Elmer Kovach (died in service 12/31/1944) Brother – Edward Kovach Sister In-law – Catherine Zika Brother In-law – Charles Long Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Illinois. Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 08, 2014, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, with, Rev. Father Paul Kala, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association; American Heart Association; or Charity of the Donors Choice.
