Irene L. Hood

Irene L. Hood, age 96 of Highland, IL, died Thursday, February 19, 2015, at her residence. She was born on November 26, 1918, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Fredrick and Louisa (nee Good) Rutz. On November 15, 1941, she married Benjamin “Ben” Franklin Hood who passed away on Monday, April 17, 1989. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. She was also a member of VFW Post 5694 Ladies Auxillary. Irene was born in Highland and worked at Moulton-Bartley Shoe Factory after the 8th grade. She worked there until they closed in the late 1940’s. She started working for Basler Electric in its infancy when the company worked in the Basler family garage. She worked there until 1952, and took off a year and a half to start her family. She returned to Basler Electric and retired in 1984 with over 30 years. In retirement she volunteered for the Blood Bank, Friday night Fish Fry’s at the VFW, active with her husband’s Shriner Activities, and helped whom ever asked. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts, and played Bingo 3 nights a week. Survivors include : Son – Master Chief Yeoman Bradford L. Hood USN Retired (Special friend Margie A. Isert), Highland, IL She was preceded in death by : Father – Fredrick Rutz Mother – Louisa Rutz nee Good Husband – Benjamin “Ben” Franklin Hood died 4/17/1989 Sister – Erna Keck Sister – Viola Zobrist Brother – One Infant Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, IL. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, IL, with Rev. Christopher W. Hill officiating. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern IL – Shriner’s Hospital for Children – VFW Ladies Aux.
